Default Need an opinion on a future car purchase (93 Hatchback)

So I have been wanting to get this 93 EG since about 2 days ago. I contacted the seller, telling him I have the funds but it won't be transferred from my savings account until Wednesday. That time I can make the purchase. However, he said that if I gave him a $100 deposit, I will be able to secure the car to come back with the full amount.

Is that a bad risk to take? It's an EG Si in very good condition and only 145k miles. It is all stock too. He wants $3400. It's smogged and ready to go.

Any opinions?

Is it at a dealership or a private person?

I don't think dealers take $100 deposits.

sounds like he's asking for it in good faith. just write him an email or a text or something stating the 100 deposit

He just wants to make sure he doesn't turn down offers and you stiff him. On the other hand that price seems high.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. It's way above KBB value.... even for an Si with those kind of miles and in its condition. He doesn't want to go lower than $3500 and there are a lot of people asking about it.....

What a dilemma.

And yes, it is from a private party.

Got any pictures? Unless it's mint condition I would pass because of price.

The asking for a deposit is not too uncommon. However, if you are going to do so, then you need to make sure he can't take your money!

Just make up (or find on the internet) a holding agreement. Both of you sign it and that will protect either of you from backing out without consequences (such as small claims court).

Now as for the cars price... definitely on the high side. Unfortunately he knows people want his car.

Even if a lot of people are looking, they could all end up saying its too high as well and passing. Hell, a car my friend and I looked at had at least a dozen other people look at it in that same week and not one of them was even interested in the car after another week (two of them came up and talked to the owner WHILE we were still looking it over). They all low balled him and he wouldn't sell.

We however, managed to get a nice deal out of him afterwards. If my friend had jumped the gun he woulda payed about 700 bucks more. Sometimes patience really pays off.

Good luck!
