FOTA splits from F1

Formula 1 has been thrown into chaos after eight of its major teams said they are now planning to set up a rival championship for the 2010 season.
The threat by members of the F1 Teams Association (Fota) escalates their row with world motorsport boss Max Mosley over his budget cap proposals.
"The teams have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 F1 Championship," said the teams.
"We've no alternative than to commence preparation for a new championship."
Mosley was insistent on introducing a voluntary £40m budget cap for teams to curtail a "financial arms race" in F1.

F1 breakaway would be bad - Sutil
But Fota refused to agree to his conditions, prompting championship leader Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso to take their drastic action.
As much as I think things have to change, I can't see this ending well.

Why?
There are sporting bodies that oversee teams that actually own race equipment... and there are Sporting bodies that actually OWN racing equipment. I think we're in for a good time with many changes in the future.
**** budget caps and tech caps and slowing the cars down - let's get back to building the most obscene land-jets we can fathom! Woooooooot!
I can't wait for next season :D

Different country(s) but the IRL-CART split didn't really work out for either. So you will have an official F1 with who knows what as competitors, and a FOTA series with almost all of the traditional F1 teams. So if you win the F1 championship, you still "didn't beat the best". No idea what will be on the schedule for the FOTA series, It's doubtful they will go to Monaco, and I'm 100% certain that Bernie will try and lock tracks out of hosting a FOTA race if they want F1.
Now we are more likely to get a US grand prix since there is going to be at least 1 US F1 team and FOTA would be retarded to not not come here if F1 doesn't. Count on me for attending.

some of the tech caps I'm fine with. I'm glad they got rid of traction control. stuff like RPM limits suck though. I don't think we can ever get back to the era of 6 wheeled tyrells and sucker cars.
We're now talking MANUFACTURERS not team owners that are splitting with the sporting body. The most similar sport that has gone through this would be the FIM/Motogp restructure... and Motopg's MANUFACTURER BASED series is well and healthy

I agree 1,000% with Archidictus. F1 is prototypes so let them test wild concepts. Let them have a 30,000rpm redline if they want. I don't want to see some dumbed down car...."show me what you've got!"

I think this is a huge turning point for F1. The teams are fed up with the way the sport is being run. The governing body changes it's mind every year about the rules:
2005 - Here's a new set of specs for the cars to slow them down and no tire changes ($100's of millions in tyre development)
2006 - Just kidding, tire changes are back (more $100's of millions in tyre development). Oh yeah, and spend $500m to develop V8 engines instead of V10's
2008 - No more traction control, redesign the car for that
2009 - Oh, here's a new set of specs for the cars to improve overtaking...redesign your cars again ($100's of millions in development). Oh yeah, and you can't test during the year because it costs too much money.
2010 - Guys, you're spending too much money...you can only spend $75m next year (down from $300m-$500m)
The teams got fed up with it. On top of that, the commercial rights holder controls where all the races are held, and sends F1 to the countries with the highest bidders but no fans (Turkey, China, Bahrain) and leaves behind countries that actually have an F1 following (Canada, US, France).
I hope this new series is run with common sense and that FIA, FOM both burn to the ground.

You still have 2 series instead of 1, so you have a divided audience. With the economy being what it is, people may decide they are only able to go to one race. So who do you go see? In a sense, it doesn't matter, it's bad for both.
With the 1996 IRL/CART split...IRL had the Indy 500 and CART had Penske and Ganassi. Well, for 4 years CART dominated the IRL in terms of fans and viewers, but the CART sponsors wanted exposure in the Indy 500. Ganassi dipped their toes in the IRL in 2000 at the Indy 500, and Penske made an appearance in 2001...both teams won the race. They both jumped to the IRL full time in 2002. Once those two powerhouses were in the IRL...the rest of the teams followed suit and CART had nothing.
I agree, whats good for Ferarri is good for F1.
If F1/Fota have dramatically different rules, and I'm assuming they will, it's going to be very difficult for a team from one series to go and cherry pick a race from the other like Penske and Ganassi did with Indy. Maybe if F1 goes to a somewhat spec car like IRL, it is conceivable, but if Max/Bernie are still there, there is no way in hell they would allow that to happen.

Bauley is exactly right. With all the major players ditching FIA, the fans will follow. FIA is screwed royally, and yes, I expect the lawsuits to start FLYING in at the manufacturers.
The Ferrari Tifosi are a crazy loyal bunch of people.

Well currently for those of us that live in North America, the option is to go to ZERO races. The FIA thinks it's a good idea to cancel races in the US, Canada, & France in favor of places like Bahrain, Turkey and Abu Dhabi - places that are of little market value to the participating manufacturers.

It's beat up track that doesn't get used and you could just tell there was no energy.
It was like they were racing on some desolate track that no one even knows how to find...oh that's right they were.
Thats Turkeys own fault. First you're the Ottoman empire then you are Turkey. Is it Istanbul or Constantinople. make up your mind. Sheesh.
