If your plugs are soaked in gas DON'T try starting your car. Get it checked out by a pro. Gas leaks ain't no joke.

Check whether the timing belt slipped or snapped.

I know you checked for spark, but If it was bogging down more and more as you gave it more throttle, and possibly the CEL was flashing... please try this:

take your distributor cap off, then the rotor... undo the 2 screws to the coil and check to see if there is any discoloration on the metal case of the coil... if so it could be the coil...

otherwise it could be a whole list of other things... any other symptoms/specifics?

Have you compression tested the cylinders?

Is spark at the plugs bright white bluish or weak orange?

Weak spark could indicate a bad coil.

You may have fouled the plugs.. replace the plugs? FWIW..How are you testing for spark?

If an engine is flooded with fuel while it is being cranked, gasoline can soak the plugs and bleed off the ignition voltage before it forms a spark. On fuel injected engines, wet fouling is less of a problem but can happen if a cold start injector leaks or there is a fuel calibration problem that creates an overly rich startup mixture. The cure in all cases is to wait for the plugs to dry out, or to remove the plugs and clean or replace them.

hold teh throttle all the way open for a few minutes, then while holding it only slightly open, attempt to start the car, what is the result?

x2 on a possible spark plug fouling though

One of your tests probably was not done correctly or was misinterpreted.

Does the CEL work?

Double check the mechanical timing (see earlier diagram) and the cylinder compression.

What color is spark? Be sure to check spark at all four plugs as described here.

sounds like an injector problem.... if you have an injector that sticks open, the motor will bogg and die....if you have spark, compression, and fuel, the car should start.....your motor is probably flooded right now if it isnt starting....to get it running again, turn the key and crank and keep it cranking with the gas pedal to the floor. dont worry, you wont flood the motor even more. when u put the pedal all the way to the floor it cuts off the injectors
