How to build a sub box?
A friend and I are thinking of trying to build a sub box for one of my subs. It would be designed to fit in a tight space so not just a trunk box or anything. He knows about building stuff while I'm more into the audio side of things. He was saying just build the box a few inches past the sub and he didn't think the volume of the box mattered.
However me on the other hand knows you need a certain amount of air space inside of the box. I don't know how much but know you need it.
How can we figure out what size the box needs to be to get the air space we need? It's a 10" Kicker Comp VR DVC 4ohm sub. What size does our box need to be? We need it to be as shallow as possible.
Any other tips for building one?

is it for the "2001 Dodge Ram" ? if so i just a customers 2000 Ram we put the sub in the center consul "seat" we took out the seat the bottom comes apart we did a fiberglass shell to line the inside of the consul with a mdf base the sub down fires into the floor. you can hollow it out and use mdf "wood" to make a small boy to fit inside we have also seen a ghetto job were the guy hollowed out the seat and sprayed expanding foam to make the walls lol
any questions pm me
good luck

Well, thought about that although not sure if that's where we want it to go or not.
Also what size MDF should I use? How much should I expect it to cost? My buddy was saying just get 3/8" Plywood from Lowes but I know I need to use MDF.

use mdf you dont need anything thick . I did one with mdf about a year ago and mdf, glue, ect
cost like $23 and about 1hour not hard at all bro
the customer is running one 10" jl 10w0 off of a 200@1 punch amp which is mounted under the passenger seat and it sounds good

kicker says "Max Rec Sealed Box Volume (CU. FT., Liters) 3, 85" which more than your center consul has your consul will give you about 1.77 which is more that what you will need
it will sound good bro
i used packing pea nuts to figure out CU. FT worked great

I'm more than likely not going to mount it in the center console. I'm thinking more of under the seat. Which size should I go with if I do that? I use my center seat so hate to make it super hard to sit in.

do not use plywood,,use mdf 3/8 and get a sheet at lowes,,,and if you have the dimensions they can cut the mdf for you no hassle and its free unless you want to tip the guy cutting it for you. Also counter sink your screws and use slicone to seal the inside of the box when your done building it for you get a air seal tight sub,,,you'll know when you get it right because when you press the sub with you fingers it will have a slow suction. The cubic space you need is on the kicker website and dimensions you need.
i beleive it costed me more building it than just buying a box.

This site has a lot of useful info plus calculators to help you with your box volume/dimensions. I'm all about SQ so I just stick to building sealed enclosures, which is much easier to build.

You need a Math formula. I assume it just a regular shape box. L x W x H dvided 1728 of the external dimension. Once you figure that out. Just subtract each side by 1.5 if you're using 3/4 MDF board for the internal. Don't forget to subtract the woofer displacement. Around 2.0 cubic should be good enough for the Kicker 10" sub. Seal box are great for space in the trunk, but if you choose ported box it will be much bigger and take of room and will be bits more boomy depend on install.
RMS power handling of the Comp VR 10 is 400W so use 3/4" MDF min.
Internal volume of box is critical to subs performance, box must be airtight for best results.
