Default to "B" or not to "B"

i have a d16z6 in a 95 civc ex and i want to swap engines. i was weighing the options between the different series. i know i want dohc and want to turbo in the distant future. should i go with the B series engine or an h22 or k20. i want something that will be fast for a DD. i dont want to mod my sohc if its not worth it.

There are all sorts of different swaps and most of them depend on the amount of money and time you're willing to Invest.

Cheapest B-Series swap is probably a B20, I know Password:JDM do sale on those things for dirt cheap.

Or you could go LS for decently cheap, and snag a VTEC Head and go LS/VTEC

Or you could make a Poor Man's Type-R out of a GSR ad such.

H Series would NOT be fun to get in there..they're decent motors..but I wouldnt want to dick with the mounts tbh..and H Trannys aren't the best..remember what they're made for...yet there's the H2B if you're a loaded balla and you get the conversion to run a B Series Trans on an H motor..that be cool, but still a bitch

K Swap is probably the MOST expensive..however all sorts of new parts are available for it..and well...it wouldnt be a 10+ yr old motor lol Also, K Makes the most power stock.

so..whatever you can afford man.

If it's your first swap, you want to do all the work yourself, and you want vtec, do a gsr swap. There's a really good step-by-step how-two at c-speedracing.com which makes the swap cake. There are so many parts for the gsr, it's ridiculous.

Doing a K-series with legit parts and no k-pro is going to cost at least 8k. IMO, it's not worth it for low 200's whp stock. 8k for a boosted stock B18c with a tune will be plenty fast and up in the 300's whp range.

It all boils down to your budget, however. Hmotorsonline is regarded as a very reputable source with excellent engines that are generally pretty expensive. Probably low 3k range for a gsr swap. Then figure in a few hundred for oil, misc tools, belts, water pump, and bs.

Plan well and follow your plan. Good luck!

Well I will save for it over the next couple months. I don't have lots of money on hand so I thought about building it on a stand over time. I am new at this and would first engine build. My friend just got back from the military and bought a porsche boxter and its the only car je has ever had that is faster then mine. I don't like it.lol. If I can get it t keep up I would be happy. Don't know if this is realistic. I don't have to go tubo. Just want a good block to start with. Don't know my little sohc can do that if I build it.

id would go ls/vtec. just make sure to properly build it, or you will tear it up and it will go boomb.

In order for best bang for your buck:

b18 Ls turbo
b20
b18c Gsr
b16a2
b18c Type R
K20

If you said you wanted 300whp as cheap as possible, I'd tell you to turbo an Ls. Turbo motors blow up, even with a great tune. I'd rather pay 500 for a new Ls longblock than a few thousand or more. Vtec is nice, but it's not THAT great. I would advise against the b16 if you want to go all motor. It's not fun revving all day to make any power. Good luck and have fun.

An Ls longblock is around 6-750. A gsr is 2-3x that. How is a gsr a better value? Especially if you blow the first one. You can hit 350whp easily on any b series motor. Most people don't need more than that for a daily driver. I still say Ls is the most cost effective way to go.

What are you going to do with the car? DD, Drag Race, Road Race?

Personally if you are going to build it up over time, over lets say two years collecting parts from ebay, honda-tech and shops this here is a option.

Find a GSR or ITR block sleeved out to 84mm. Pistons, get some that will get you between 11.5:1 and 12:1 compression ratio.
Then get a ITR head with a good valve train, Supertech, Omni, Skunk2. Some good cams, BC4, SK2 PRO's, JUN3, TODA B something this size.
Edlebrock Intake manifold, and a TB 65mm or larger
AEM 3" ITR CAI with a V-Stack
SMSP or Hytech header
2.5" or 3" exhaust
Tuned with Hondata S300
This should get you into the 220whp range. I know I missed a few parts but this should give you a idea of what it takes.

Option #2 H2B, very solid power out of the box. Plus tuning and a few other parts big power and torque.

i know it's not what you had in mind but check out the forced induction section. There's guys in there who have turbo'd SOHC dd's making pretty decent whp.

I don't know how good it is to boost a D16Z6 but I'm sure some people are rocking it.

I was looking for a B for my Civic but I've decided to boost my D. Consider boost.

if you just want boost for a low dollar the B18a1/b1 (LS) is the best way to go its a good base for cheap

Turbo the d if it has good compression. 6 to 8 lbs of boost is safe on a stock motor. It will make more hp for the dollars you will spend. You can buy a b series or a k later when you have more $$$.

ya if you want boost and somewhat cheap, ide say buy a ls long block with a b16tranny and do ls/boosted, and or ls/vtec/boosted. ls are great for turbos from low compression, and cost, and there easy to find incase you blow it

well i dont have one in mind. i was thinking about only sinking 4 to 6 hundred a month if i build it. or just save till i get a few grand for a swap. i am just curious on which route to go. i have recently just come across a race shop in toledo ohio (pure tuning) and contemplated having them build an engine for me since its all new to me. in that case i would just grab a b series out of the scrap yard since then do head work and stuff to. dont know if this is wise.

You could get an H22a swap cheaper than a B16a swap and then just turbo it if you'd like... I know here an H22a swap is about $400 cheaper than a B16a swap, but if you can buy an LS and boost it, but I was just saying an H because it's more power than a Gsr and cheaper than both the B16a and the B18c.
