Icon2 hybrid tranny reliablity..

ok well i build my first hybrid tranny thanks to the teachings of mistbone(transze/bonespec depends on what forum he on) and bense.

now here's my setup:

89 DOHC ZC 1st-5th
91 Si 4.250 FD and countershaft
91 Dx diff
91 Dx case.

now as i writ this i just finish putting on 1,300mles on a brand new DOHC ZC rebuild longblock and tranny. everything was rebuild even suspension etc.

anyway since i put 1,300 miles on the tranny i'm about to make a mak a long drive from SC to NY and back. how does the dependablity of the tranny ranks. i know if anything would have went wrong it would have by now. but i'm still curious.

i have a OEM flywheel and when i need to get up and go it moves at any rpm and mph. the semi down fall is at 80mph i'm at 5k rpm and well i think i'm at 28mpg. my gas gauge is shot i'm about to fix my sending unit..

thanks

remo

As long as you correctly shimmed the mainshaft and diff you'll be fine.

Unless you're on some tiny tires you're nowhere near 5k at 80mph. With 23" tires you would need a 4.9 FD to be close to 5k with the .878 5th.

yes i did. i'm using GS-R blades w/ 205/50/15 tires. i think the question should be along the lines: i drive back and forth to work i put on 60miles round trip. and yet it's on a a 1/2hr driving one way. will my tranny hold up to 250miles straight driving before i stop for gas.

unless you're building up insane heat or have chunks of metal floating around in there, i'd have to say go for it. if its held up to 1300 miles with half hour daily drives, you're probably good

remoer, long time no see.......

What fluid are you using?

I've only ever burnt up one gear, .878 ZC 5th, but this was due to oiling issues, the port was clogged for 5th gear.

eh been around i was going to ask on oco but i was here at the time... there a huge argument about don and me returning to D in the admin section so childish.. anyway...

at the moment i'm using 10-30 but it wa only to break in the tranny. i'm going to upgrade to royal blue before i venture off on my trip...

by the way bone the tranny is freaking awesome i can't believe how quick it is and with an OEM flywheel i might slap on a 12lbs or VX flywheel... it just awesome bone. it gets up and goes fast... i'm in lust w/the replacement for displacment.

i found a Zxi 4.44FD but still in talks with the person. hopefully that'll be in my next tranny but if i can't come to a agreement with him i'll try to get a Mfactory or GearX 4.5FD.

I liked the ZC 3rd when I had it in my Y7 trans with the 4.71 FD. But the first time I actually drove a Si/ZC setup I wasn't impressed too much. A bit spoiled with the MFactory close gear set, but it just felt boring. A FD will definitely pep it up. 4.9 would make 1-2 shorter and 3-5 will ramp the same as the close gear set, but 1-5 RPM drops will be longer than the close gear set.
