Default Can you Use your C-pillar bar to mount your harnesses?

I have a c-pillar bar (the brace that mounts between the rear window pillars) and I wanted to know if I could mount my 3 inch harnesses to it safely. That way I don't have to get a harness bar.

I had them mounted to the floor but i heard that thats not safe.

No. You need a harness bar. C pillar bar is far too weak.

And the C-pillar bar does virtually nothing, too. Sell it and put the money towards a harness bar or roll bar.

The truth has been spoken. C-pillar bar is entirely inappropriate for harness mounting. Mounting to the rear seatbelt points is ok if you have a harness bar to guide them over at the proper angle, but then you get into the stuff where you shouldn't have a harness without legitimate rollover protection (and even then, the length of the harness would be longer than optimal, and...).

Safety should never be sacrificed to price... sadly though, sometimes it is.

Like everyone has said, a harness only properly works with the correct equipment it is accompanied with. I suggest at least a autopower roll bar with harness bar attachment.

Absolutely correct gentlemen.
Never sacrifice safety ever!

Jimmy brought a good point up, and some good links:

http://www.soloracer.com/autocontrol.html

http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/soloracerdotcom_2056_6412467

and a different alternative (DOT approved)

http://www.soloracer.com/rallye3.html

http://www.soloracer.com/rallye4.html

Those are 4-point harnesses with various mechanisms that make them safe(r) for non-rollover protected vehicles. The design is such that they're also supposed to prevent submarining. For anyone on a super tight budget, but still wanting something more than the stock harness, those would be some options. The CG Lock would be another one, and that is about as dirt cheap as you can get.

Do note that the 4-points are illegal in several HPDE-type organizations (though not all). Just something to be aware of.

I've ridden in cars with these, and can't say I would personally use them, but it is good to inform the populace of all available choices

Thanks again, Jimmy

I'll leave this open for now if anyone wants to discuss these.

Autopower/Kirks is my affordable suggestion.
