Icon3 94 Accord EX shuddering at constant speed

Hi all. I have a 94 Accord EX with 204,000 miles. Recently, the car has been shuddering at most constant speeds. The shudder goes away when accelerating briskly and when letting my foot off the gas. The shudder also does not happen when I rev the engine in park or neutral. If I put the car in drive, put my left foot on the brake, and gently rev the engine to ~1600 RPMs I can feel the shudder. Does this point towards a transmission problem or can it be an EGR valve issue? I know a clogged EGR valve can cause these symptoms, but can it cause the shuddering when I rev the engine while in drive but with my foot on the brake (I'm not moving...)?

Thanks.

No check engine light (it does work; it comes on when I turn the key to start the car, then goes off) and the transmission selector is not flashing.

I would check your CV joints.

I had my mechanic look the front end over and they replaced the upper ball joints on both sides. Will they be able to diagnose a bad CV joint without taking it off and inspecting it? The car does not make any noise during turns...

Do you know if the CV joints and axles have been ever replaced? When a CV joint "clicks" while turning, usually it is a torn boot that has allowed dirt and other road grime into the joint, slowly destroying that particular joint. I have had three Honda cars experiance the same problems as yours. Every time, new half shafts solved that particular problem. If the mechanic is good, you can replace the half shafts without even separating the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle. FYI, CV stands for Constant Velocity.

The entire half-shafts were replaced at around 80,000 miles. I was definitely thinking the something directly in the drive train, i.e. wheel bearing, cv joint, or the tranny itself, was the cause of the problem. Could the CV joint still be the problem if the stumbling happens during the stall test (foot on brake, car in D4, rev up to 1600 RPMs...I feel the stumbling during this procedure)?

If the original half-shafts were replaced at 80,000 and you have 204,000, isn't time for them again? (204,000-80,000=124,000 on the second set). Honestly, I have never heard of the stall test. After searching the internet about the stall test, I would still suspect it is your CV joints.

Thanks! I'll drop it off with the mechanic Tuesday and tell him to look at the CV joints. I'll let you know what they say.

It's not the cv joints. I'm having the same problem with my 94 Accord EX 250,000 miles. I traced the problem to the egr system. The valve is working and the trouble shooting flow chart points to either the ECM or the egr control unit. I don't have the connector to check any farther. If I am able to diagnose problem correctly, i will let you know. If you have solved this problem already, let me know. Thanks

Long shot here, but I've had the same problem for about 2 months on my 93 Honda Accord EX. I read more on it and it sounded like the EGR ports, so I did the port cleaning process. The problem persisted, so I checked my spark plugs and 3/4 were drenched in oil so I did a valve cover/cam gasket replacement. soaked up all the oil and replaced the spark plus and wires. The problem still persist. I am stumped. No CEL. only symptom is it begins to buck/stutter/shudder around 1500-2000 RPMs. I can accelerate through it, but I want to fix the problem. Any ideas?
