5th gen hatch vs. 6th gen hatch
Just wanted to get your opinions on which is a better shell to build and why...? Ultimately, this car will be LS/Vtec'd and turboed. Goal is 400'ish hp.
I'm having trouble deciding which shell i'm going to buy for my "project honda". both are within the same price range.
(sorry, please don't cut me up too badly. i'm a honda noob and mainly work on toyotas... mr2 specifically)

Ok, I won't cut you up badly, but first, you don't want an LS/Vtec Turbo'ed Honda, You will just blow it up after a week if you are a 'honda nub'
Boost a built GSR or B16 and call it a day for 400ish, do NOT go through the trouble of LS/Vtec.
EG's are typically lighter platforms, specifically hatches are just a HAIR over 2000lbs, so you need to be ALOT better with 'what you want' from the car.
You say 'shell' so I'd say a beater EG hatch gutted to ****.

Well, EK9 is the Civic Type-R and the EG6 is the SiR both of which are right hand drive only. I guess you mean EG or EK. I know it sounds picky, but guys that know their chassis codes will think your talking about the Civic Type-R and SiR.
Have you driven a 400 whp Civic? IMO it sucks ***.

okay my bad lol. i didn't know the numbers on the end were that in depth with the models/trims. I guess what i mean is eg and ek.
anyways, i'm looking at cars with no sunroofs and minimal options.
i'm going to go see a black 96 civic cx hatch tomorrow and there is a 93 si hatch forsale close by but i don't like the sunroof (more weight).
my brother-in-law is a class A honda tech at a dealership and has been toying with these cars forever. he's going to help me with this entire project.
...just would like to get some HT opinions that's all.

I'd rather put my money into an ek hatch. Although it's a little bit more weight, I'd rather dump G's into something a bit newer and better looking.
I would deffinitly pick up the black '96 CX. You cannot go wrong with a black ek hatch, atleast it's always been my dream car to build.

i like EGs they just look better IMO and their lighter then the EK
as Dasfinc said the 92 CX is the best base for a race/street car it has (pretty much) no options its the most basic base you could go with.. the EX and SI are gonna have more options wich means more weight
and the thing with the lsv is it depends on how its built.. iv seen turbo lsvs last longer then turbo B18 or B16s
the ls vtec is just a big back and forth argument

that's what my bro-in-law says too... the EG is the way to go if you're after speed. and they're the most easiest to work on too because of the space he says. in fact, he has one with an LS motor in it and a Type R head waiting to go on. Just waiting on the golden eagle kit to arrive.
The problem is that I live in Canada and it's hard to find an EG with a clean body (unless you want to pay up the ***). It's safe to say that 90% of EG's are rusted pretty good up here. EK's have less rust simply because they're newer. My bro-in-law even says it'll be hard to find a decent body EG and that I should just settle for an EK.
I guess I'm just gonna take whatever comes first with a decent body.
What i'm really after is a really fun street car that won't break the bank. Something that runs low 12's on street tires and puts many frowns on V8 guys.
thanks for the non-douche responses.

it all comes down to your own personal opinion really. i drive an eg and i love it, if your shooting for " 400'ish " then the weight isn't really gonna matter! it all depends on what body style you want, if you buy an ek or eg and boost a stock gsr youll hurt plenty of v8 guys feelings!

weight is half the battle of going fast.. if you have 400whp in a 2000lb car and 400whp in a 2500lb car wich is gonna be faster?
its gonna be the 2000lb car
weight is a very big issue so dont pass it off just because of a turbo

My car boosted a little harder with the front and back seat full as apposed to just me out on a drive. That is pretty much 500 more pounds. But more weight is more drag. What "jdm lmc tx" is saying is that you won't notice a huge difference with the ek vs. the eg at 400whp. If it isn't a drag car(you want to dd it), then get the ek. For a drag car then get the cx eg.
Ya Id get a 92 CX they are 2094lbs stock and I think 94-95 CXs went up in weight. The thing is even with 400whp getting an extra 400-500lbs to move off the line is where the time will be lost. To get that extra mass moving will take longer.
1992 civic's in general have a 'full' engine side wiring harness, which means they are pre-wired for Vtec and a 4 wire ECU, so you can simply use whatever engine harness that comes with your new motor to just plug and play.

ahh, someone sees what im sayin now! all im sayin is and im hoping most will agree, with 400 wheel hp on the street most of first and second gear are lost anyway so the extra weight just might help with traction for a dd. but i dont know where everone is getting the 500lbs diff. between cars? the LIGHTEST eg ( 1993 cx trim ) wieghs 2094lbs compared to the HEAVIEST ek ( 2000 cx weighing 2395LBS ). now thats the lightest eg to heaviest ek, complete polar opposites with a 301 pound diff?
Here's the weight list so there is no BS!!

I say compare similar models to be fair.
92 Civic cx 2094 lbs
96 Civic cx 2222 lbs
I'd go with the EK for a number of reasons:
- the chassis is stronger
- longer wheel base for better ride
- newer
- less vibration in steering column, it's improved
- position of pedals is improved for comfort and effort
for the extra 125 lbs, i'd still do the EK

I voted EG6 because the poll confused me, and I thought you were gonna import a CTR or a eg SiR and build on it or something. In which case I would say a EG6 because they are more common and cheaper.
But I would go with a EK chassis since you live in Canada and it would probably be nearly impossible to find a clean eg chassis. Unless you love body work.
