Default How to a install a tranny cooler?

I have a 1998 honda prelude SH. Its a manuel but it still has tranny cooler lines so I picked up a small tranny cooler that way I can install a new radiator.(The aftermarket radiator did not have the tranny fittings). Where and how do I install the tanny cooler. The box just came with some zip ties and fittings with no instructions.

Any kind of help would be appreciated.

I'm up for info on this as well; I've just had the lines looped for the past 2 years, but now that I'm getting my car fixed up again I'm going to put in a cooler as well so I can hopefully take it to the track. I'm assuming a fairly small size will work; I was looking at the B&M 5.75" x 11" and intended to put it directly behind the radiator.

Why would you just loop the lines.? There's a reason it goes to a cooler in OEM form.

AFAIK no Manual Prelude comes with a cooled transmission. Most aftermarket radiators have the cooler ports in the radiator built in for the auto trans (which does use a cooler), but if you are installing on a Manual you just leave them blocked off.

To the OP, I'm pretty sure OEM manual transmissions don't have any ports for a cooler to be attached, so you would probably have to drill and tap.

you sure because the manuel SH prelude has the atts unit which does have transmission cooling lines. Most aftermarket radiators do not come with fitting for transmission cooling lines they just offer a separate tranny radiators.

I just wanted to know if anyone had an idea of how to mount a tranny cooler. Is there a good way to do it or am I just going to have to ghetto rig it with zip ties and bolts.

SH's basically utilize the oiling system from the automatic trans; heck, the ATTS unit even uses ATF. As mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any aftermarket aluminum radiators that offer an integrated oil cooler like the OEM version does, so a supplemental cooler is needed. For me, I didn't feel like bothering with an additional cooler when I first installed my aluminum radiator, so I just looped the lines. I don't drive it hard enough to really bring up the temps in the ATTS unit, so I wasn't too worried about it.

When I went looking for a new radiator last year, every one i looked at had the tranny cooler built in. Maybe it's a 4G thing.

Tunerguy, the cooler is mounted infront of the radiator. The goal of the cooler it to have the air hit it first while driving, this will effectively lower the temperature substantially as compared to OEM where it is cooled in a 200+ degree radiator. The cooler is zip tied to the radiator with the supplied zip ties which work very well, just be carefull not to overtighten as you will start to bend the fins on the radiator and cooler.
Hope this helps, good luck.

A trans cooler on a manual trans requires an electric pump and the proper plumbing. It's not as simple as plumbing a cooler into an auto trans.

The cooler on the SH is only for the ATTS unit. It does not cool any of the trans fluid.
