Default Short Bodied Strut?

I'm in the market for some new struts. I'm currently riding on some semi-new Monroe Sensa-Tracs and they aren't working for me. I'm riding as low as I can go on them. I got about an inch suspension travel all the way around. Let's just say, it's not a smooth ride.

I'm looking for something with a shorter body that will allow me to stay as low as I currently am, but give me a little better ride quality. I was looking at the Skunk2 Sport Shock, but saw that Koni came out with a STR.T version.

Which would be good for what I'm looking for? Doesn't even have to be either one of those two.

Price range about ~$300. Willing to spend more, if it'll give me what I want.

Current ride height for reference.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You won't find anything in the $300 price range that will stand up very long to stiff coilover springs. You're going to have to go with Koni Sport, Tokico Illumina or maybe Bilstein HD (if you don't need adjustable damping). The Illuminas are probably the only ones you can use your current sleeves with, though.

For 300 there is no way to get a quality shock especially one with a shortened body (like a koni spss3.)
Like Patrick said if you want to get a koni/bilstein you are either going to need new sleeves or an adapter to capture the circlip correctly.

BTW, since you are pretty damn low i would recommend some extended top hats to give you some more shock travel.

If I'm going to have to swap out the whole thing, I might as well not waste my money on just new struts. Think I'll start looking into a full coilover suspension.

So all these struts that are saying they have a shortened body, and what-not, is just a lie? Or, is it not short enough to justify it? I don't understand why I can't use the S2 sport shock or the new Koni STR.T.

The top hat is sitting about an inch above the top of the strut. Every significant bump I hit, throws the body in the air. I have the DIY top hat extensions in the front.

I don't want to raise the car up, but it looks like I might have to for a while, at least.

I just use the car to cruise. I don't do any type of racing. Hopefully there is something out there that can give me what I want, for an affordable price.

Limited shock travel is not the only culprit of blown shocks. IMO the bigger factor is the spring rate. The skunk2 sport shocks and the str.t's are not valved to handle springs with rates much higher than stock (ALL SLIP ON COILOVERS). Sometimes even my illuminas have a hard time keeping up with my front spring rates!!

And if you want more shock travel that desperately, there are other ways to lower the front of your car like the shock fork trick and getting roll center adjusters.

Funny thing is that skunk2 claims they are built for their slip ons and springs. There are a couple of guys who had them for a year or so. But if your gonna be changing shocks every year might as well save the $$ for the koni's $455 shipped once or $250 every couple of years for brand X.

Do you think you can give me a comparison picture of the OEM strut verses the S2 Sport? I think that would help me greatly.

I understand that spring rates = blown shocks and all that. My struts aren't blown.

But, like I said, if getting a full coilover suspension is my best bet, I'm gonna have to start looking for a system that will allow me to ride as low as I am, comfortably.

Was that so hard? Instead of posting 2 pointless responses, you could have been nice from the beginning.

Muchos thanks, though. I appreciate the help.

Seems like there is hardly a difference in body length. Don't think these will work for what I'm looking for.

Looks like Koni/GC is the logical choice.

Dude look at the shafts and not the bodies before you say there is not much of a difference. Notice you can pre-load the slip on's with the shorter shafts. But I agree GC/Koni FTW btw Next time do your damn footwork.

Idc about the shafts. That's not what I'm worried about. I'm worried about the actual body. I'll see if I can get some pictures of what I'm talking about.

Well if the shaft is shorter the shaft itself won't bottom out on the shock like the full shafted shocks. If you needed the shock to have more travel then you could get GC top hats as well.

Still not what I'm talking about. I'm not having trouble with the shaft bottoming in out in the shock, I'm having trouble with the top mount bushing hitting the top of the strut.

So your not running bump stops? Kinda sounds like that and your shocks are blown.

Again, my shocks aren't blown. I'm running DIY extended hats.

Extended top hats wont save your shocks if the are not valved to your spring rates.
