Okay now what the hell is this chunk out of my tranny drain hole?!? HELP!!
Is this supposed to be like this? It's a 1989 CRX Si, with the stock motor and (as far as I know) stock tranny.

What the hell is that?!? Is that normal?

Come on guys, someone's got to know if that is supposed to be there or not, or if it matters...

Mmkay guys, that's not the tranny fill bolt...it's the access to the mainshaft snap ring. Somehow my lack of mechanical and honda knowledge just set my project back by over an hour.
Lock this thread please, no use to me anymore...

yes that is supposed to be there. that is the countershaft nut you are looking at. that is where you access the snap ring when you take the tranny apart.
i am putting my tran back together and that stupid snap ring is holding me up. man it helps to have the correct tools on hand.

that is not the tranny drain hole. like jeff c said, you use that to pull the two halves of the tranny case apart.
the drain hole is a very small rounded bolt with a 3/8" ratchet insert. the fill bolt is a 17mm up to the left (when looking from the passenger's side).

I accidentally fill the oil using the hex one. If I open the 17mm nut next to the CV joint, everything should drain out to the right level, right? Thanks.

Little off topic...but Jeff C, there is an easy way for getting the casing back together. IF you are stuck...IM me.

Yea two flat tip screw drivers

i had a ring expander
i had to use LOTS of persuation to get the two halves back together.
what kind of persuation...rubber mallet?
now that i think about it, pull the main and countershafts and place them in the tranny "cover". i would make sure it all fits into the cover with the snap ring in place. if it does, measure the part sticking out and see how much depth you have in the clutch housing portion of the case. this way you can make sure its not binding up b/c the mainshaft is sitting up too high.

just to clarify, the 17mm bolt is the fill hole, not the drain hole.
I took off the 17mm hole and about 4 quarts of oil drained out. Tranny shifts a lot smoother now. Thanks.
