Default strut mounting kits

i am replacing the struts and springs on my 95 ls. i have taken the entire assembly off as one piece in the rear. if i buy a new upper mounting kit, do i need anything off of the old assembly? if so, if i compress the spring will the nut come off easily on the top of the strut? i tried to loosen it without compressing the spring, but the whole thing just turns. is there a trick to getting it off? thanks

you will want to use a spring compressor, because there is so much force when you got the load off the retaliation of force can seriously damage something, you, or someone else. when did my last suspension on my brothers ek coupe, i didn't use a compressor, but i leff the assembly in the factory location and easily released the pressure and had to remove LCA to pull it apart.. anyways the only way i got the nut off without turning the strut is i had to go and buy an allen wrench socket set ( sure thats not the proper name but its how i best can describe it) its like a 3/8" socked set that has allen key heads in it.. the end of the strut has an inset for an allen wrench, i tried using a regular allen wrench and bent it all up, needed something strong so i had to purchase that and use an open end box wrench to remove the nut.
