Where To Buy OEM Paint?
Does anyone know where to buy oem honda/acura paint? .. i am interested in SuperSonic Blue Pearl, and possibly Type-R Black, or Milano Red.. still deciding, but i cant find out where to buy it, i searched high an low on the internet an even called an acura dealer.. if anyone could hook me up with a site, or a phone number to call i would appreciate it, thank you.
i was always told that manufacturers actually bought paint from paint companies, as opposed to actually having their own OEM paint...
was i misinformed? can anyone confirm??

Check locally for automotive paint stores...They can mix it custom to the OEM color. That will most likely be the best way to get that color exactly. Not to mention if you need more, it's local.
Edit: And yeah, it doesn't need to be "OEM" paint...it's just an OEM color. Any major brand name paint will get you good quality, but the prep work is where the details count. You won't be able to find OEM Honda Paint...but you can get PPG, Sherwin Williams, etc that are the color you need. PPG Shopline seems to be pretty popular, and I think it's what I'll be purchasing soon also.

yes, your not gonna go to honda or acura and get a gallon of paint or anything like that, you can get touch up paints from them with a little brush. to get sprayable paint, go to a local paint supply store, give them the color code , they have the formula for it. Tell them how much you need and they can mix it up for you in either a ready to spray formula, or in a straight formula that has not been reduced yet.

Sorry to thread jack but I have a question for IMPATIENT. I was thinking of painting my coupe this color paint matched by Sherwin Williams. Is it actually a pearl paint because I understand it changes from purple to blue. Is there a different way that it needs to be sprayed?
just cause it changes colors at different angles doesnt mean its a true pearl paint. it could be a pearl basecoat, not a base/mid. Whats the color code and ill be able to tell you for sure if its a true midcoat. But keep in mind, the paint shop can mix a true basecoat/midcoat color code in a pearlbasecoat formula. ill explain the differences here.
pearl base: everything is mixed together, one sprayable basecoat with a pearl EFFECT added to the mixture to give the appearance of a true 3 stage pearl paint, of course the effect is not going to match perfectly too a paint thats a true pearl because its not going to have the deepness or as much effect since it is actually part of the basecoat and is blended with other pigments, its not on top of the basecoat enhancing it, its just in it. thats 2 stage. base/clear.
base/mid=TRUE PEARL: you lay your basecoat down like you would during any other paint job. than after coverage is made you would basically do the same exact thing with your midcoat, your midcoat is your pearl, its normally a transparent, clear base mixed with tons of pearl powder in it, if you have the code it will come with the corresponding pearl powder color, if you want it custom you can have any color pearl midcoat to get the look you want. it can normally take up to 3-4 coats of pearl before it will even start showing up to give the effect you want, the more midcoat you add, the deeper and more of the pearl look you will get. But, it sprays just like basecoat, so the more you add, the more chances of it becoming textury and building up on certain spots. It needs to be sprayed very even with proper overlap and temperature, just like a heavy metallic, to ensure you dont get a really thick heavy spot of pearl or that it doesnt stand up and dry too fast, It can build up and look weird if its layed on too heavy on one spot. Midcoat dries just like basecoat since its reduced with a basemaker solution, if your doing a full paint job than you can add however much midcoat you like just keep in mind the texture dillemma, normally 4 coats is plenty, if your blending something thats already pearl you need to do a spray card and see how many coats your going to need to get the desired match. it needs to flash just like basecoat, although i like to let it flash a few minutes longer. Midcoat can sometimes gum up a little when nibbing before clear cause of the pearl powder, in my past experiences anyhow, so i just give it a few extra minutes of flash time. just dont sand it to try and nib out any dirt without touching it up, than clear goes on. Thats where the term 3 stage comes from. base/pearl/clear.
sorry for going on a tangent, haha.once i get typing its kinda hard to stop, i just want to try and explain more and more.

Wow great info man. The color code is B-90P oem on 99 Integras I think. the paint in person doesn't seem to look real deep but the color does change significantly.
supersonic blue pearl is a base/clear. it has an effect in the basecoat. ive sprayed it many times.no midcoat these paints are semi flops and have a few slightly different colored metallic flakes in them to give the illusion of slight color difference at certain angles and in varying types of lite. along with the pearl effect powder. Although i bet it would look really sick if you sprayed a crazy *** purple or lite green pearl as a midcoat or something. thats the great thing about paint, you can always do something unique if you want.
car manufacture's actually buy paint from any of the approved companies that will give them the best price.... it could be ppg all the time or it could be BASF. and so on and so forth
Its funny you say that cause when i pulled up at work this mornig i looked to my left and saw like an 07 accord and on the bottom corner of the window it had the little anti theft printing and right next to it said ppg, i was like uh, cool lol
And as for IMPATIENT thats some good info about pearls
. So would the "real way" of painting pearl be labeled as a tricoat/clearcoat? beacuse im spraying the notorious R-81 (milano red) color that is labeled as a
tricoat/clearcoat but im pretty sure its not a pearl?? Is it a primer coat?. It just seems as the color is not the same when i sand down my old paint a little and respray, so i bought R-97(Roma red, i think its R-97) and might just go with that cause i just cant get my R-81 to look a little darker like it should be.
Sry to add more questions, my local paint shop finish master helps me out alot with questions but they dident really know what to say about this.
builda'teg 92- when you say "tricoat" or "3 stage" the clear coat is included... so its not tricoat/clear... its just" tricoat."
a tricoat or 3 stage consists of the base, then the midcoat (where the pearl is mixed in) then the clearcoat.
2stage is base&clear
IMPATIENT was talking about how the color supersonic blue pearl, had the "effect" in the basecoat.. this "effect" is the pearl. he also mentioned there was no midcoat... therefore, its a 2stage not a 3 stage, or tricoat.

^^never seems to skip a beat,thanks
Sry about that i guess i say it like that cause thats how its laid out in the sticky, probably misunderstood, thanks-->Milano Red Tricoat/Clearcoat R-81
Ok ok so "fake pearl" is base/clear with shiny pigments and what not in the base coat.....then clear........so 2steps (Super Sonic Blue B-90p)
"real pearl" is a tricoat with base, then pearl, then clear...(is pearl that little like 8oz. bottle stuff?)
So i guess my million dollar question is "what is the proper way to spray Milano Red Tricoat/Clearcoat R-81"? base/ something /clear?
or is it mixed in when i give them my vin so its just 2 steps base/clear?
Not trying to thread jack but CRX91 was intrested in milano red, so lets get some info about it so he can make the right choice lol
