Default Engine Overheating

Hi Everyone,

So I'm driving home from work today and noticed the A/C suddenly stopped blowing cold. I turned it off thinking that maybe it was going out. A second later I looked at the temp gauge and it was in the red. I immediately exited the highway and turned the car off when I could pull over. I smelled a bit of coolant as I opened the door to get out and popped the hood. When I popped the hood I didn't notice any coolant inside the engine compartment. I looked underneath the car and could see a small amount of liquid under the transmission area. I also noticed a small trail of liquid behind the car.

I called a friend and he mentioned that it could be the heater core since I don't see any coolant leaking from the radiator. Any input on where I should start troubleshooting? Any other things come to mind besides the heater core?

The car is a '96 Accord 4-cylinder.
