Default grinding while turning over

just swapped an ls into ef hatch and i got it to turn over but it makes a low, slow grinding noise and the engine will ocassionaly jump. and it doesn't turn over very fast. never starts. it just finished re-assembling the motor and put it back in. the starter is working. what could cause this noise?
