Default Changing out tranny fluid...drain/fill bolts are where?

Alright, looking at my tranny case from the passenger side of the car, I see two plug-looking bolts...the weird thing is that they're not bolts, like the oil pan drain bolt, they have square cutouts in them, which makes it look like you need a special key to get them out!

Am I looking in the right place? How do I go about doing this?

Thanks!!

Alex

yup..use a 3/8s rachet. don't take out anything with a hex hole, that's not the right ones. the drain plug should be a 3/8s cut out and if i remember right the fill plug is a few inches above it..17mm.

Cool, thanks for the quik reply...you think I'll be able to do this with the car on the ground?

last time i did mine i had to jack it up to get the drain plug out..then to fill it i used a funnel w/ about a 2 ft piece of hose on it. fill til the fluid runs out..just over 2 quarts for a b series.

Oh, you've got a B in there...I've got the original D16. The drain/fill plugs on mine are actually both for a 3/8ths ratchet. I haven't done that much work on my car, so this was something new for me, to see something that just uses the ratchet head.

Do I need new crush washers for both bolts? On my car, it looks like there has been some leakage around the bolts on my tranny.

The shifting acion in 1st and 2nd is kinda stiff...will changing the fluid out (Honda MTF) help this at all?

Thanks again!

Where can you pick up Honda MTF, and what is different from motor oil with SG rating?

Honda dealer.

Supposed to be better for your synchro's, other than that I really don't know the difference...I just follow what Honda says.

Right now, my Honda is saying, "Hi, my Tranny fill and drain bolts are both locked tighter than Britney Spears, and they're not coming off *******!!! BUAHAHA!!!"

DAMNIT, there went my whole afternoon, and I'm just going to have to take it somewhere now.

Ok does the D15/EW2 use the same trans as the D16? and as for trans fluid i have been hearing that some type of gear oil produced by Redline works good i cannot remember the exact name at the moment i think it was Mtr 70 or something like that but i also heard that the Redline Shockproof Gear oil works well too

Very Important note::: Make sure to work on the fill bolt first. If you get the drain open, and can't get the top open, you've got yourself a big problem.

Yup...I figured that one out...I couldn't get the fill bolt off today so I'll try another day...maybe pull on that breaker bar a little harder...or find another way to get it off. The ratchet wouldn't fit in the space, so I had to use a box-end wrench and try to make a bar fit over the end of that.

Thanks again for the help and advice, guys!

Yeah, to say the least...especially since my local honda dealer had the MTF for $4.06/qt, and the washers totalled $.86 together...
