Default Performancebox (personnal lap timer)

Hey

I am looking for an automatic lap timer for amateur use. I can't use a beacon. I am looking at a GPS application for simplicity.

I own an ipod touch, but unlike the iphone, I cannot use it as a GPS unit, so they applications are useless for me.

I have tried a Performancebox this week end, and it was fantastic. I a looking for you opinion on it, if you ever tried it, and I am also looking for suggestions on any alternative option that the market probably offer and that I am unaware of.

Thanks !

Here concerning the Performancebox :

Hi, I use a MaxQData GPS unit. I mainly use it for autocross, it is very helpful for comparing runs against eachother. You can plot one on top of another and view the data logs at the same time to see which one was faster and where. You can compare lateral/longitudinal G forces, speeds and a few other things at the same time. You do need a Pocket PC to use the one I have with. I picked up a Dell Axim X51v for cheap on eBay. It is pretty nice for not a ton of money.

I have done lap times on a road course with it, but never viewed them real time, I have only reviewed them after I was done driving. I think you can get it to display the lap times as you are driving, but you would have to have the Pocket PC mounted somewhere visible...I put mine in the glovebox, so I dunno.

Alright.

I am guessing 500 bucks is pretty cheap for a complet plug-on set-up. It works like a charm, but I was just wondering of my other options..

Thanks

I think because you'd need a GPS-based unit (with the no-beacon rule), $500 is about as cheap as you'll find. They will all most likely be data acquisition units rather than just lap timers, because I don't see a company going to the trouble of GPS programming for nothing but time.

I am also using the racelogic's performance box, its proved very usefull, software is also very user friendly.. DL1 is a nice option also, thought more expensive, but features multiple sensor inputs. On the other hand it doesn have a real time display.

Lets suppose that I am now looking at least expensive options, with transmitter.

What do you think of the Longacre product ?
