Oppps Cooked H22A5 rebuild time?
Hello Everyone this is Ben from England.
I've just put the sweet H22
in a kit car and over heated it - cooked it- BOTHER**! - Lost nearly all cranking cylinder pressure and it won't start now, so of came the cylinder head, some scoring but not horrific. What are the other signs of a badly over cooked engine I should be looking for? Please help as the summer is nearly over and I need to get this 740KG Honda H22 and wheels going before Christmas!!

Overheated eh? What caused it? That's the first thing to find out. Overheating is a symptom of something... and if you don't cure the illness, then it'll just happen again.
Things that you want to look at and check to make sure they're still ok:
Pistons (I'd check the ring landings for damage or burning)
Rods
Cylinder walls
Valves
Cam journals
I'd go ahead and have the radiator checked and flushed.
Make sure the head isn't warped or cracked, a machine shop should be able to do this.
Have the block checked to make sure the deck isn't warped. However, this is usually one of the last things to go.
Things I would replace:
Head gasket
Bearings
Thermostat
All the seals
I'm sure I left something out, but this should give you a nice head start.

Wow, a 740kg (1630lbs!!!) kit car with an H22A - Nice! What is it? Like a Caterham/Lotus 7? Post some pics.
Are you saying that the cylinder walls are visibly scored? If so, that can be a big $$ issue if it's bad enough because the cylinder walls are lined with a special FRM material in the H22a. They can be honed a little bit to smooth out imperfections, but if the scoring is deep, the block may need a whole resleeving - or it might be cheaper to get a new bottom end... Was this a stock H22A motor, or had you done some internal work on it?

Thankyou for the help, the scores are enough to just catch your nail when you run your finger over them, so I guess they'd need resleeveing, although if the cylinders were taken out to the standard oversize (I'm going to find out what this) I presume you wouldn't need to have them resleeved...... (Any idea how to measure the depth of a scratch?
) this may be enough to take the scraches out and not have to get it resleeved... ummmm,. as for pictures yes I've got a couple but how do you attach them to "my profile"?
cheers again Ben

Well, you can hone out each cylinder as long as they are not too deep. But I don't know the spec for the max you can hone (the standard oversize) off the top of my head. It's in my service manual which I don't have with me now... I'll check when I get home. Of course, now let's say that you can hone it out to the oversize - then you need to buy the Honda factory oversize pistons for when you put it back together...
As far as posting pics go... you have to host them on a web server somewhere. You can then post them on the board like the following syntax:

From the 97-99 Prelude service manual, Page 7-17:
"Cylinder Bore Size:
Standard (new):
A or I: 87.010-87.020mm
B or II: 87.000-87.010mm
Oversize:
0.25: 87.250-87.260
Bore Taper:
Limit: (Difference between first and third measurement) 0.05mm
Reboring Limit: 0.25mm max"
Pretty tight tolerences, eh?
