Default best tires for deep sand?

Not sure if this post belongs in this forum, but most guys here know a lot about tires. I am planning on taking my 4wd wagon to the sand dunes to do some goofing around. I know airing down the tires is essential....but what tires?

Snow tires?
Gravel tires?
All seasons?
Slicks?

Ha, slicks. Do some searches on Rally tires. Hankooks Rally tires. Probably this one would be best http://www.racetire.com/products/hankook_r201.htm

You will need something with a stud lookin tread pattern. The deeper the better too. Maybe even look into truck tires b/c I don't think you need the soft compound of the race tire in the sand but I could be wrong! lol

Have fun!

Probably your best bet in a passenger car tire size would be BF Goodrich All-Terrain or Baja TA. Run them at about 15 lbs in the sand with a good rim & you should be fine. We run them on all our chase trucks & they work great.

The deep sand come from you exhaust, not your tire.

I was going to recommend paddle tires too. Interesting question though Just like the dune buggies have. I don't think all seasons or even snow tires would work as the texture of sand compared to snow and dirt is completely different.

Sand like mud just moves out of the way when you push on it as opposed to dirt or snow where it compresses and compacts forming a harder surface.

Also you wouldn't get stock sized tires. You would want something wide and you would want your suspension to be soft (aka rallycross). Probably get something in the 225 to 245 range. You want to float like snow shoes.

You'll pay a fortune for them though. If this is a one or two time deal, then just stick with muds.

Actually, I'm pretty sure its possible to take a worn tire and bolt paddles onto them. I don't know anything about it but I know the buggy folk do it sometimes. I hope you have a lot of torque!
