Default Cant get housing halves back together

ok so im at wits end with this transmision.

in attempting to put the two halves back together, i cracked one case because apparently when it felt like everything was lined up it wasnt. I got another case, and i just for the life of me i cannot get the case to drop down over the shift changer piece. ive tried flipping through gears, although its hard with one hand and the trans on the floor. and it just wont drop...is there anything else i can do?

since i have a case with a viewing hole, i can see that the rod for the shift change holder is just off like a 1/4 inch or less to lining up and i have no idea what to do...

i think im giving up and taking it somewhere tomorrow.

I responded to the PM, Nathan.

In addition to what I wrote...
1) What diff bearings are you using?
2) The locating tab on the input shaft is on properly and in its position, correct?

If you changed a case half, you will have to reshim the diff and mainshaft.

the diff bearings are the enclosed ones that were on the diff, they were not changed. the location tab is at 12 o'clock each time and i can feel it drop down onto the ISB. in fact the ISB is sticking in the new case at times when removing.

crap, that never crossed my mind. but aside from that, im almost positive thats not the issue. i can get the case down as far as the locator pins. as i just told honda-bull via pm, im almost 100% sure the only issue at this point is for some reason the vertical shaft of the shift change holder is not lining up with the blind hole in the case, as thats what i punctured on the case.

it just makes no sense.

i feel your pain. i just did my diff today. best thing to do, take a break for a couple hours. chill out and come back with a clear head. hah. you have you case sitting on wood blocks so its all flush like so:

i don't know to much lingo on all the names of the trans parts, buts they're pretty simple.
heres things i would do:
make sure all your gear stacks are in perfect, shift forks, etc. all meshed together.
spin the input shaft (i think thats it, that shaft that goes into the flywheel, clutch, etc)
spin it from underneath while its on blocks, make sure it all feels good and spins nice and easy with out holdups.
i pull off that top input shaft bearing (the tallest one that sticks in the other case half) and through it in the freezer for a bit. then it fits nice into the upper case half.
put that location tab at 12 o'clock like you said. pound that bearing on the input shaft (i just use a block of wood on top of it and hammer it down)
then just drop the case half down from hovering over top really slowly.
only make slight movements to get it all aligned.
try it a couple times and see how you make out.
just take your time, one time it'll just fall down. and usually with that ISB freezing cold you can push the case almost all together by hand.
then just a little bit of taping with a rubber mallet while spreading that C clip.
thats how it do it.
not sayin its the right way or pro way. and you may already know everything i just said or do it differently.
just tryin to help with some ideas.
good luck.

this would also pertain to the thread, so i have a question myself.
any advise on this or quick simple ways any tranny pros do this..
so you know when you have your case upright like in my pic up there, when you're first splitting the trans. you have the idler gear, and those other two bolts with the springs and ***** out. and all the case bolts.
then when you spread the C clip at the top, that shaft drops down and you can just pull the case off.
well i got mine all back together, and the C clip is spread over that bearing with the groove, everything is bolt up and tightened, but the C clip is like an 1/8-1/16 of an inch from getting to that groove. and theres like no room to be able to try and pry that whole shaft and bearing up to get the clip into the bearing groove.
i even hung the trans upside down and tried prying it towards the clip to get it the rest of the way in (like hoping it would fall in (just like it fell down when i spread it to open the case)) but i just cant get it.
so its stuck half way down the bearing right on the edge of the groove it needs to get it in.
any tips?
thanks.

there is a trick, 1/2 way into a certain gear to hope to hold the shift pin into place.

You already busted one case, one must have patience.

....stick to D's

I had a problem where I didn't spread the c clip when I was trying to put it back together and trashed the clip also be sure that the shaft is not resting flat on the ground prop it up with wood

Try to be patient the first time I did my trans it took 4 times so I know how u feel

Ps typing this from my phone sucked

Is it fixable? You gotta get that thing back in the car and let me know how it goes, lol, but seriously take your time and be patient.
