oil filter
hey guys whats up. I have a question about what kind of oil filter can i use for my 00 civic coupe ex with a d16y8 vtech motor. it has the basic bolt-ons. i have always used 5w-30 royal purple oil but last time i bought it the guy was trying to sell a really expensive filter when i have always used a regular fram filter. should i step up to an expensive filter or it doesnt matter. i was thinking of getting jdm hamp filters but was wondering what you toughts were??
From what I've heard here and elsewhere the Fram oil filters are not good. Also, I heard that Honda uses Fram filters now... go figure...
Btw, I read somewhere that it's good to use an oil filter that has oil bypass so if the oil filter gets clogged, the oil keeps flowing and doesn't get stuck causing extreme oil pressures (and thus causing oil pump/engine damage). I don't know if the Honda filter is like that since I haven't changed my oil, myself, in a long time, and also which filters have a bypass feature.

There were tons of threads on here a little after Honda switched from the larger Japan-sourced filters to the smaller US- & Canada-sourced filters. Evidently the US-sourced filters were made by Filtech and were decent but then they switched to Canada-sourced filters made by Fram which are complete crap just like all Fram filters.
I found a thread on it though the pictures died some time ago. There were others...

yeah, as of now the small oem honda filters are basically just like the fram though guard filter (gray can).
on the other hand, a lot of people have been trying out the bigger s2000 oem honda filter with no problems. some say it gives better pressure, some say other stuff.
Yeah, I've read that the S2000 filter will work. It's still made in Japan, so there's no risk of getting a cardboard Fram.
Personally I switched to Purolator PureOne. It's the correct size, has a micronic filter element, and some folks swear by it. But I'll still buy K&N or Mobil-1 if a retailer is running a $20-25 synthetic oil & filter special.

The K&N filters are good, but not worth the price. Internally, the Mobil1 filters are identical to the K&N, and a little cheaper, but they don't have the nut on top. They are both good filters, but there's a better alternative: Both the K&N and Mobil1 filters (around $14 and $11 respectively) are identical internally to the Purolater Premium filter. They're the exact same filter, made by the same company, except the Purolater is only like $6. That's probably the best bang for the buck in an aftermarket filter.
Since I don't have a source for Purolaters close to me, I use Wix filters, which are also fairly decent. At least, all of their important parts are made of metal.
If someone can find the link, there's an article where a guy cut open like 15 different oil filters, including various Honda OEM ones, and you can see exactly what they look like inside. He critiques them and everything... It's well worth reading.
Here's a pic of everyone's beloved OEM Honda Filter, with the cardboard endcaps:

Compared to a Fram:

You can see they're largely the same. Obviously, there are other styles of OEM honda filters floating around, but in my experience, I never know what I'm going to get from the dealer anymore, so I just don't buy them.

the old honda oil filters (ends in A01 i believe), they are very well made. the newer ones (ending in A02) are made by fram = junk.
wix filters are supposed to be very good (napa gold is the same)

I use purolator filters L14459 and the pure one is PL14459. I mostly use the pure one but have used the standard one which is good too. I'd stay away from the fram filters although they will tell you that those cardboard end pieces are not a problem it's actually the glue they use to hold it together that will clog up the filter. I've never used a fram filter and purolator works fine for me so I stick with them.
Also I've used mobil 1 filters before although not on the civic but they are around 10-12 bucks and the pure one can be had for a little less around 6-7 bucks.
is it just me or has oil filters sky rocketed recently? I remember you could get a pure one for around 5 bucks back in the day.

Fram filters are great. My friends have been using them for a while, and now I use them. OEM Filters are a waste of money. Napa Gold filters are great filters, but thats only if you have a napa near by
