Stripping the paint completely off? aircraft stripper combined with a poly abrasive wheel on a angle grinder is how i got the paint off to bare metal easily on my hood before i dropped it off at paint, had like 8 layers of random colors since i boguht it as a backup since my current hood was rusted and dented. I stripped a few layers with 1 good soaking of aircraft stripper, then hit it with the poly abrasive wheel while it was still softened and it came off with ease to the bare metal.

If you're tryin to strip it I say 36 or 40... But if you're tryin to prep it for primer I say sand the clear coat off with some 180 and then go to 320...

if you're gonna sand down the paint use 80-150... then work your way back up to 220 to get rid of the 150 scratchs... then 320.. then 400 and 500

but if you only wanna prep it for paint... all u needa do is scuff the top layer with 400-500

and if you're gonna strip it all off.. use aircraft remover or a more abrasive grit like 36-40

p.s make sure you treat any bare metal areas with either a metal conditioner or a primer of somesort (self etching or epoxyprimer)

I dunno if I'd paint on somethin that high... 320 is max usually...

I second the second part though...

320 is too low
you'll see the sand scratches.

also i dont know why ever1 says use aircraft stripper to take paint off a car. i would NEVER use that to take paint off a car. use a high speed grinder with 36 grit disc on it. best way to take something down to bare metal.

if you use aircraft stripper and you dont get it all off you can destroy your paint job that you put down over it.

Im talking abiout using aircraft stripper to get the top layer/clear off, and while the undercoats/under primer is still softeneded slightly, bust it with the angle grinder. I only did this to my hood and would probably only use any stripper on removable parts such as doors/fenders/hoods.

If you use an angle grinder it'll make low spots in the metal...

If you use 320 to block the primer before paint you won't see the scratches...

<~ goin on 5 years as a body man...
