Do you mean you painted the stock ones, and you want the original look back, because if that is what you meant, all you need is some paint thinner and about 20 minutes.

does this work the same when you smoke out the white part of the lens on the red/clears for the 99-00 models? Do you just tape off the red and spray the outside of the clear part? Does this not leave a line of sorts? Or do you somehow do it on the inside?

Yeah man, like four years ago we all had our tail lights (my friends 'n I) translucent candy apple red. Pick it up @ a local hobby shop. it the tail light with a high grit sand paper and paint it all ! Paint all except the reverse, otherwise it will not match the factory red. Does look nice, and it's not too rice ;-) . I got sick of it, cause it starts to fade, and it's a bitch to take tail lights out of a hatch ;-)

I had mine painted too. I got sick of the paint fade over the years, so I just bought some red/clears instead.

i just bought some old school "white" clearish tails for my beater that i'm gonna spray red (except reverse). hopefully it will come out nice. I painted my stock tails, taping off reverse, but made the mistake to go to lowe's and buy red rustoleum brand hobby paint... well.... looks like the lights were dipped in red rubber. came out terrrrrrribly terrrrrribly bad. i'm hoping the white tails will come out nice since i'll have an even base to start with. i'll post some pics when i get done... assuming i pick up a new dig cam this weekend like planned.

I just did this to my hatch tails a couple of months ago, Painted them all red except for reverse, Dammit I really wish I had some pics because they turned out sooooooo perfect, two cans of translucent candy apple red and 3 cans of clear coat, lots of wet sanding and lots of polishing by hand, They turned out smooth as glass, they look absolutely stock. No one could ever tell that they were painted.

thats why you want me to paint yours, right sean? lol

i use transparent red from pepboys...its the second stage of candy apple...just scuff up your tail light with a dish pan sponge(the yellow and green ones) and spray away...for clear tail lights you need several coats untill it looks red, it will be pink for the first few coats....if your painting over amber, just a couple coats will do the trick.

i got pics of mine that i will put up in a day or so.

I went to walmart and picked up some transparent candy apple red spray paint and testors clearcoat in the model car section. I cleaned my tails off with windex and let them dry out really well. I started by spraying on about 3 or 4 really light coats of red, waiting about 15 minutes between coats and then I applied 2 heavy coats of red. waited about 2 days until the paint hardened up and then wet sanded them with 1500 grit sand paper until they were smooth. then I started to apply the clear coat. Started out with 5 or 6 thin coats of clear then wet sanded again. Then I applied 4 or 5 heavy coats of clear and waited about another 3 days for it to harden up really good and then I wet sanded them again until smooth. No runs or anything, Then I got some PRO brand clearcoat polish and hand polished them until they were perfectly shiny. They look so sweet

Total time: 1 week
Total cost: 10 bucks

I bought my car with tinted all red tail lights on my hatch and traded for OEM. Personal taste you can't beat the stock look. But to each there own. I had lots of people saying they liked the all red and semi tinted ones
