d16y8 head, machine question
I work at a body shop (mechanical work) for a friend. he is helping me out since im jobless.
anyways, he had a car with a mini me swap in it, d16y8 head with y7 block.
The motor is seized up. so i started taking it apart and found the reason why. The guy who swapped heads left one of the headbolts out. (stupid) It was the bolt on the far right hand side, closest to the cam gear, exhaust side.
anyways, the block is garbage, but the valves appear ok, the only issue is a warped head.
i laid a straight edge on it to verify.
i was wandering, how much machining can you do to a head? i know the more you do the more it changes the timing (as it brings the cam and crank gears closer together)
so off hand, anyone know the max you can take off of a d16y8 head without having timing belt tension problems, or having to get an adjustable cam gear?
since its a body shop, we use spare parts to rebuild other cars, or sell. its not like we have to salvage this part, but i would like to try.

Honda probably has a service limit somewhere, but I've never heard anyone bring this up. So uh, bump to help find you an answer. I'd say I have a bare Y8 head, but I understand you're broke.
You could sell the crank, rods and pistons off the Y8, I guess. Maybe you could make a few bucks off that and scrap the block.
Just an idea. You could use the Z6/B7 timing gear to correct the timing if it's like half a tooth off. If that will work, I can send you one.
If the belt is a bit too loose with the tensioner set as tight as it will go, you could use the VX belt, it's like 1 tooth shorter. I don't think this will be as much of an issue as the timing is.

its not for me.
im just seeing if the head can be salvaged so we could sell it, or use it on a vehicle we are fixing to sell.
we have a couple motors laying around, so its not that important.
but why waste something that can be used.

Most true machine shops that specialize in engine rebuilding will have the tolerances and be able to tell you if it can be or not. Also the FSM has that info in it, I recall seeing the tolerances for this.
