Default UPDATE!!! (from "Sad Dyno Day")

Taken from https://honda-tech.com/forums/all-motor-naturally-aspirated-44/sad-day-dyno-s-2562233/

As if bad couldn't get to worse, I was traveling to shoot a wedding yesterday when the motor finally told me something was terribly wrong. After getting off the 95N and stopping at a light, I heard the worst sound a motor could make....knocking.

Long story short and many car rides later, we didn't get jumped in the ghetto neighborhood we ended up in, the wedding was a success, and my car now sits with Don (DonF) at his shop awaiting the tear down.

Just wanted to give you guys an update.

;-)

I know this is not a good immediate thing but having it at Don's shop is the 1st step to a better tommorrow.

Will do and yes, I do feel better that it's at his shop. Anywhere else and I would be very nervous. On a brighter note, the oil does look clean!

Hey man dont get too down I got my B20vtec build done took my about a month and a half I dropped it in my coupe and got everything running good I took it for a drive ran just fine...then that night I was driving it home from my friends shop and it started to over heat super super bad..I had to get it towed to my house the next morning I went out started it up and noticed oil was being pushed into the coolant so I thought it was a headgasket...tore the head apart took it to the machine shop to get it pressure tested and resurfed come to find out the head was cracked ya ya ya ya!!!! I literally drove my new motor for 15 miles lol had about little over a grand into that head to...lol good times! keep ur head up man its always a battle but well worth it in the end.

Thanks man. Not sure on the header performance wise due to cylinder #1 already at a low pressure, so I'll just have to wait for a re-tune once the motor is rebuilt.

Well Don said its definitely in the bottom end, maybe a bearing. Thinking the piston was slapping the head....GSR head, not b16 = larger chambers.

:-(

Here's a pic when it was getting towed. Sorry for the high ISO, settings were from the previous night at the wedding.

Well Don found the problem. I'll wait till everything is squared away and make sure I have the correct info before posting. He's a great guy if ya haven't had the pleasure of dealing with him.

Some notes, as he is posting stuff on here. No 1 piston was "slightly" touching the the GSR head as the block had been milled to .002 deck height. No1 rod had been replaced and was 7 grams lighter than the rest. The crank was turned .010 (.25mm) atleast on the rods, not sure of mains (in car do to money). So the guess is the engine lost a rod bearing, the crank was turned, No 1 rod replaced. The noise came from a balance, head clearance problem( no1 rod a little longer) to losen the crank bolt and the key way and pulley are screwed. The cams are the orig BC3's not the BC3+ cams. Cam belt was too tite. Head needs to be checked for compression problem, does not leak with brake-clean, (disassembled re-seat valves) that we are not doing at this time.
For what he paid he did OK, just a few details missing, that he did not know about,(turned crank, lighter rod, not checking deck height) Not a King, Omni, Skunk, Jim Justice, Moody motor but is was $2000.00 shipped. It should be OK. But never big numbers.

UPDATE

Just wanted to let everyone know that I got the car back today and I must say I am VERY pleased with the results! Don is not only a great mechanic, but a great guy as well. Everything was done very professionally and the results speak for themselves. The car is so quiet that I have to check that the rpms are above 0.

I'm sure Don will post what was done (as there were several issues), but all in all I'm happy!
