Default buffer pads(terry cotton, microfiber, wool?)

What exactly should I be using with what on a rotary buffer? What should I use to apply polish/wax? What should I use to buff?

When applying a rubbing compound to get rid of swirl marks, you should use a wool pad. And when you use a polish to bring the shine out, you should use a foam pad.

At least that's what I do.
