What do you call this? Its a brake light but in the rear bumper... i've tried googling it but i get sh*t for results... is it a retrofit of some type... or what? and why do this?

LOL, well from the picture, it looks like a crap job and not even oem, but those are actually called rear foglights (not brake lights). Not sure if JDM did much of that but i know that EDM & UKDM have those standard on alot of their vehicles. They were more popular with the old school rides (ef's and da's) a few years back but have since become pretty popular with the newer models (ek's, dc's, etc...). These rear fogs actually come from the factory like that, but arent offered in the states. Usually you would see them on the drivers side, but some cars even have two, one on each side. They stay on bright (as bright as someone hitting their brakes) to be more visible to people in the rear during fog, hope this helps.

In the UK (and some other parts of Europe), when the fog is too thick, you turn on a rear fog light to help visibility. Its basically a single brake light (in terms of brightness) that's constant on with the front fog lamps. Only on one side, to prevent confusion with brake lights.

My 2002 A4 has one built into the taillights. Pull the light switch 1 click, front fogs. 2nd click, rear fog turns on as well. Both taillights are identical on that car, Audi just only put the extra rear fog bulb in on one side.
