So I'll be in the market for a tow vehicle to tow around about 3500lbs soon. I've always wanted to pick up a CRV, throw a b16 head on it with a JRSC. I know the stock tow capacity is 1000 lbs. But I figure wit the work I'll pick up about 90 lb/tq and then with a trailer with brakes. Think it'd be good to go?

 

No, Lance Corporal. Tow ratings depend on a myriad of things including, but not limited to:

Transmission, Transmission cooler, Oil cooler, Tranny shift points, Hitch, Hitch mounting points, frame tensile strength, tires, suspension, brakes, things like that.

Also, the tow capacity is calculated by GCWR minus the curb weight.

SO...

6,060 lbs. GCWR (minus)- 4,560 lbs. GVWR = 1,500 lbs

Take that 1,500 lbs and subtract your weight, cargo weight, and weight of miscellaneous junk you have sitting inside the car, and that's what you can tow. Sure you can tow a few extra lbs, they make the ratings low, because there will always be idiots pushing that line, but 2-2.5K lbs over that is just dumb. Get a small truck or something else to tow if you need to haul 3500lbs around.
