Default EM1 noob ...Dang Vtec noob

Hello all,

I've recently bought an EM1 from a second hand dealership in Ca, and after some time ...I've come to realize that I might have some kind of JDM block. The engine block reads b16A 145011. The valve covers displays a bigger Vtec font than the DOHC(this may be the original EM1 B16a2 cover).

I would like to know what I have, or how to find out.
Is this a legal swap?
Should I bring it back to the dealership?
Do I use any Vtec 1.6 spark plug coils?

I bought for 5500$.(113,00 miles on the dash)I really don't know where to go; should I keep it, enjoy the 14sec. quarter mile, or make a big fuss. I'm not a mechanic, but a veteran using his GI bill for an economical quarter horse. Ya and I know nothing about Vtec, just what I read to find out where I'm at. Hopefully I get some good advice, and thanks for reading.

hahaha i have a friend that had the same thing happen to him, he has a b16a in a 99 Si,

well they had a P30 ecu in it with the jumper and no vtec, i had a spare p2t ecu and i slapped that on and vtec hit perfect but more problems came when i checked the car, mainly all the wiring was miky moused... obd0 wires spliced into obd2b harness.

for the swap i dont think its legal,
take the car to the dealer and ask for 1000 back for the trouble they gave you for the wrong engine and all the parts you have to buy to make it run perfect.
the spark plug coils i say yeah bigger is better

It was a clean swap I think although I know nothing on the matter. I don't know if it's a OBD0 or OBD1 harness(How do I find out? and that is one of the main differences between B16a v1 and b16a v2 right?). I do know that it spanks a lot of cars on the road(8000rpm @ holy sh*t MPH), and is really fun in the Nor*Cal country(Trinity county), but I'm not looking for legality issues or an unreliable vehicle for school.

its obd0. It came in 88-91 honda integra's, civic's, and crx's and i would take it back only if you have smog test that you have to pass though it is illegal for you to swap an older engine into a newer car.

It passes smog.

uhm and I've had it since Jan.,
and it was stolen for 3 weeks ack that sucked, still has clean title.(I didn't have coverage, and luckily I left the pink slip with it, so the crooks just resold with different skirting for 3500$ on craigslist. Still got my Greddy headers and evo muffler and all my after market suspension. I lost the SiR body skirting though, but I still have my acura manifold and K&M short stack.)

Do you think I still have footing to charge the dealership with hood up?

I always thought the engine was legit because it says B16 ... when it should say B16a2 right?
If mine is obd0 then it's a b16a v1(uses cable tranny?)? My transmission is still EM1, so how can that work? For some reason it had gear oil in the tranny so I paid to have it replaced with Honda trans fluid ...did I just make a mistake?

I don't see any indication of a date on the block.

It's on the head between/above the exhaust ports of cylinders 3+4 IIRC. Looks something like (9|6) which is 1996.

you can use any b series tranny hydro or cable clutch on any b series engine.

In other words just because your block is 88-91 doesn't mean the transmission is. Your transmission could be either. Just check to see if it has the conversion.

I would get some money back from these guys.
The car passed smog because THEY passed it. You can sue them or atleast threaten to sue them and get some money back from them cuz that is super illegal specially for a dealer to illegally pass smog/ sell a car with illegal motor for the streets.

Ya I went to the dealership, but it wasn't open, so I'll try after the four day. When the car was found from being raped, my mechanic did an emissions diagnostic. It came back fine, so does that mean it'll pass smog?

If the head is obd2 it can be made to legally pass smog

you gotta give more infor like:
what ecu?
what head?
any wiring mods?
did you check what tranny you have?

And the motor swap shouldn't be a problem. its the same motor only JDM. not much of a differene at all. the stock one probably blew and they replaced it with this one and ran the stock ECU and everything.

Maybe it is the stock motor. is it a si or sir?

I think the 00 civic SIR came with b16a

^^^ 00 SIR is a canadian car we know as the 2000 Si and they are both equipped with the b16a2. Not a b16a

Yes there's a world of difference in these motors
b16a= obd0 88-91 crx sir
b16a2= obd2 99-2000 USDM civic si and some del sols (correct me if I'm wrong)

they have different dizzy's, alternators, starters, oil pumps, intake manifolds, some sensors are different and so on and so forth

like i said a b16a can be made smog legal in a obd2 car but there's a lot of modding to the original equipment on the engine

Can you tell which ECU it is?
I put synthetic oil in the engine 5/30; is that OK?
I changed the gear oil to Honda Trans fluid, in the EM1 tranny, so was that legit for success?

I thought the numbers from the exhaust were for valve placement.

it looks like you have a jdm b16 in it, its legal as long as everythings hooked up correctly and the motors not stolen and its obd2

I couldn't make the numbers out on the head, and I didn't get any pics of the tranny code either
the ecu is a usdm obd2 99-00 civic si ecu

so whoever put this engine in your car did it right and made it obd2/usdm legal
so you have nothing to worry about

Sweet, I'll rock out with my **** out, and ballz too the wall. My 1st fast car was a 71 mach 1 then I got a Ford probe GT, and know I'm in love with Vtec for life. I like to add I wrecked my probe on an airport with a unlocked security gate, at 80mph(into the end of the runway burm/wall) uh ya that ended fast cars for me, but I"M BACK WOOT JDM SiR

*Note* I'm still trying to get two grand back

Let us know what happens.
Either way you got a good deal bro good luck.

P.S. please tell me it's not salvage/rebuilt title?
cuz if it is it's not cost efficient to get full coverage on it, and as we all know that is a big "no no" for em1's
