weld in some sheet metal, prep it, and paint it (to protect from rust).

MEGA WTF! Its almost like someone was trying to 'honey comb' the car but Epicly Failed. I hope that wasn't you. If it wasn't, find the person you bought it from and slap them in the face.

Anyway, I do agree if you want to do it 100% do the sheet metal procedure but I seem to recall something that is made for metal spot filler..I'll do some searching.
