I believe that you are supposed to contact
your local State Comptroller to provide documentation
related to the exchange of the engines..

I would like to hear the answer for this for CA, and how much of a headache/fun time it is?

there is probably more to this story, if the vin tag is removed from an engine or tranny item can be taken for tampering. if it was a jdm engine with no vins it should not matter what engine is in what car.

Are you referring to a specific motor, or a motor swapped car? My Crx is reffed, and when I smog my car all my DMV documentation just says smog test only. I have heard that you can have your title changed so that it reflects the swapped motor.

In California you would have to take your car to a state ref and have it inspected and most likely smoged. when it passes then it will be registered to your car after a small fee.

I don't know what you have to do in other states. I would think it has to be inspected and a VIN ran on the motor. If its Japanese then thats not possible and you would probably have to have papers on the motor as well.

the only way you are going to find out for your state is call your local DMV and/or look on their website.
