b18 turbo build advise request
Hey guys,
Im going to start cracking into my b18a and am a little confused about how I should proceed.
Im building this motor for turbo daily driving. no more that 400hp/ 20ish psi... those are just numbers im pulling out of my ***... flat out, i don’t want to waste my time and money with a low power set-up, but i don’t want to have to swap out transmissions or axles every month! I’ve got a new house and new wife so $$ is a concern, but not an issue. The higher the part prices, the longer it will take to collect the stuff...
I found a guy on ebay selling piston/rod combo packs that look to be a good deal. They are eagle rods and your choice of JE pistons or CP pistons.
I have herd good things about JE pistons but have never run across CP before. any one have any feed back about either?
Next; I had planned on running arp head and rod studs... any one know if i can run the rod studs with eagle rods?
Next up; what’s a good brand wont brake the bank for rod and main bearings?
now to the block; Im pretty much planning on having it bored out (i doubt it will still be in speck with just honing)... i know im not going to be putting down drag strip numbers but boosting the hell out of it to surprise a few people on the street would be fun... would you guys recommend having a water jacket brace, or maybe going fully sleeved? the goal is to make it a closed deck so i can boost the hell out of it without getting piston float.
Head; I am at a total loss with this one. Ive seen the battle about the b16 head flowing 5% more at the top end than the b18a/b head... I personally don’t care what way i go. If i find a deal on a b16 head ill ****** it up, but i dont think i care enough to search one out... other than the differences in flow, and compression between the two is there any other reason i should get a b 16 head?
Manifold; good brands, bad brands ect?
valve train; what brand cams, springs, retainers, valves, do you all recommend? again im at a total loss when it comes to this. All i know is that i want to run a turbo specific cam, and should be running stiffer springs. And if i run stiffer springs i should get some better retainers... But are valves really necessary?
I dont think i have high expectations of massive HP numbers so do you think some of this stuff will be overkill?
I dont mind spending a bit of coin collecting the parts, i just don’t want to get this thing put together and be held back by the lower end.
Im sorry, I know I can find all these answers bit by bit, and I see that s@nt0s has started a handy setup/numbers thread but as with any thing I have too many individual questions and thought it would be easiest to start a thread to organize it all into one shot.
