I can't pass smog, HELP!!!
Alright guys about two years ago i busted my crankshaft real bad, so instead of replacing it I just replaced the engine. Don't have much money so the shop ordered me an engine for $400. They did not send the right engine instead I got a JDM D15b motor. Now for some reason I dunno I can't pass smog with the engine. My friend at the smog check station said I might need to replace the cat. How can I pin point the problem? Is my friend right? Help a brother out, registration is due in a month. thanks in advance.
well he did say change the Cat.. why don't u do that.. I'm sure he will help you out.. but not if you are a gross polutter.. so change the cat and go back and see what he says.. or ask him if he can hook you up..
high flow cat installed is $120...from a muffler shop in industry...im me for directions
i'm sure you can find a muffler shop closer to where your at and for the same price...

How did you pass visual if it's a JDM motor? or am I missing something? Sheesh I feel you bro I basically have a stock motor and I failed that **** too. Too much hydrocarbons. Did a tune up hopefullyill pass on Monday :crosses fingers:

i dunno if read this on here or somewhere else. if you go to like an autozone or pepboys kinda store they have bottles of this stuff that you put into your gas tank. most of them offer full guarantees that you will pass so if it doesn't work you get your money back.
I heard this somewhere on h-t before. If you have a VAFC, you could bump the VTEC crossover point really high, so that you'll be running lean and clean.
Other than that, just make sure you have all the USDM smog equipment up and running properly.

Well if you friend works at the smog station can't he hook u up? Thats what friends are for! Well it could be alot of reason's what kind of readings did you pull up on the scope. Did you check your vacuum lines? Oil, plugs, cap, and rotor. Check little things like this to make sure your car is running right. You might have a misfire and be running rich. How high was your Hc and Co readings. A trick you could have your friend do is heat up the cat before you do the smog test that will reduce your Hc levels. If your Hc's are high and Co's are low that would be a lean misfire and you wanna check for bad o2, vacuum,or plugged injector. etc..if its got normal Co's its probably a mechanical problem. High O2 would be a rich misfire check for clogged air filter, Cts defective, thermostat stuck open saturated charcoal canister. There are alot of reason for you to fail. But just make sure your o2 sensor, cat, ignition system, are all working properly. If your car is running in good shape and your not having any driveability problems then its something simple. Get a tune up and check exhaust system.
1) Do a tune up!
Check your cap & rotor, spark plugs and wires....
2) Do not add any octane booster prior to your sniffer test!!!
Also use the lowest octane gas you safely can(i.e. without detonating), so it will have less chance of unburnt gas.
3) Change your oil!
'Dirty' oil can leak through the piston rings and will burn off dirty which can affect your readings.

plus, clean out your t/b with with a throttle body/intake mani cleaner. make sure there is no gunk in there.
and if your O2 hasn't been changed in a while, now is the time.
change your cat as well.

this is going to be a bad year to smog with the new regulations requiring a dyno..my volvo pass d smog every time cept this year..end d up having to put a new cat in..pvc valve..a new O2 sensor..beside cleaning out the intake and fuel delivery system..$500, but i did pass after all that...volvo s are not cheap to maintaine...i think ur friend is overlooking the visual as long as u pass the sniffer tests
ok i have 91 civic si stock motor... im too high on HC and relly High on NO i have recently changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, dizzy, and she runs good but im still failing how can i lower my NO would a new cat be the best bet
I had a JDM motor also and my friend did a pretest and it was too high so I changed my hi flow cat out with some no name brand cat from a muffler shop for 50 bucks. Supposedly the cat is so cheap it will only last a short period so right after i replaced it I went and tested and passed, as long as you pass the visual, if you replace the cat, it should pass, just make sure they do a pretest to be sure. Also if you have and aftermarket header take it off because it doesnt hold enough heat to activate the catalyst inside the cat, just use a stock iron exhaust manifold.
Hope that helps...

Thanks for the replies guys. But I switched catalytic converters with one of my friends and I passed. What is this about a visual? I have never had to go through one.
find a relative in Oregon or some other nearby state where you don't have to smog the car, transfer the registration there and presto! You just passed smog! now I'm not saying that it is 100% legal or anything but gets you off the hook for a few years.
i can pass any car, any motor for $375.00, without changing anything, no headaches... any jdm motor, no problem, INCLUDING test only... guarenteed! IM me if you want. im in san gabriel vally.
