Default Need to have a key made, can I use one of the door locks?

Welp, I've pretty much given up trying to find the key to the rex, and I am in no position to start installing a start button, kill switch, etc. before next weekend. Sadly, this was my ONLY key, so I need to have one made from the lock itself. Can I take out the door lock and have a key made for it, or does it have to be the ignition. Also, there are two 4-digit codes on the door lock. Can I use one of those codes at the dealer to get the key made? There aren't any codes on the ignition that I can find anywhere. It would save me a lot of money if I could just bring in the door lock, but I want to make sure that will work to start the car. Thanks!

I did that, but their computer said they couldn't find the key code from the VIN. I gave them the VIN and the title, but no dice. They said the car was too old to find the key code that way. That would have been too easy

doh, i guess they dont have 88's in their system...hmm...a locksmith might be of assistance with the vin, you can ask one...but otherwise whatever number is on the key cylinder...the easiest one to get out is from the hatch...

you local dealer is lazy. That 4 digit code (the keycode) is all they need to make a key. With a vin number, they can get the code, along with you proof of ownership. They may have to call American Honda, but they can get it.

If not, pull one of the many lock cylinders in the care and looking closely will get you the key code. I would go for the glove box first. then maybe the hatch or the "secret compartment". Doors might be last on my list since it is harder to get it out.

Trust me. I do this ish all day long.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. It would be cool if my dealer was just being lazy, since I could always push them harder or go to the other honda dealer in town. It would certainly be the easiest option rather than having someone make the key for me. I don't have a glove box or anything in the rear anymore, but I got the door lock out with no problem since the door is already gutted anyway. There are two 4 didget codes on the door lock. Anyone know if the codes have letters in them, or just numbers. One of the 4 didget codes has a letter in it.

Stupid key

Hmm...two local dealers I called both said..."What year is it?"

"1989"

"Oh, that's too old, it won't be in our system"

"So I can't get a key made?"

"Nope."

Ever so helpful they were. So what should I do?

Spoke too soon...I read some of the other posts again and went and pulled the lock cylinder out of the secret compartment, right behind the seats. Had the code, 4 numbers long, printed very small on the side of the lock cylinder. Will this code, that was on that lock, work the same for the ignition, trunk, and doors also?

Thanks in advance -

Alex

take it to a lock smith, they can tell you the code for your key and make you one. if only you were in my area id refer you to the key man, for 25 bucks he could make you a workin key using only a vice grip and a metal file in under 5 min!

well my best known secret in the book don't use the door lock thing, to hard to take of and they get worn out over time. Take the peice off your glove box has too simple nuts or screws (forgot), plus it won't be has worn has any of the other locks, the key will work beautifully. you take thta peice out take it to the lock smith your done, trust me ive done it to my lude hella times. it works.

Got it done...got the code #'s off of the lock for the not-so-secret "secret compartment" - the lock is just held on there with a sliding tab and once you take that off it comes right out...Honda made me a new key for $7. Thanks for the help guys!!!

UPDATE!

Thanks to your advice (lazy dealer was right on) I took everything back to the dealer today and said "just figure it out." Fifteen minutes and $2.50 later, I walked out with a key. I used my driver's side lock for the code (and to double check the key fit). Sure enough, it works in the ignition. To anyone who needs a key like I did, MAKE THE DEALER DO IT. My car is an 88, so don't take that for an excuse.

Thanks again!

we can never tell which cars will be in the system, and which we need to call on....if they ever give you the "its not in the system" bs, act like a winey customer and say something like "what? Damn, that is weird. Well, can't you call Honda or something?" Cuz, that is exactly what they will have to do.

I say that its a possibility...but the human interface still applies...You can work wonders by being nice, but it still boils down to the gut feeling. A owner of a car or bike would most certain bring what they think they need to prove they own the vehicle...a crook wont. Good info though...'cause now im gonna pay my locksmith a visit and get the master made for my car ( all the previous owner had was the valet key and he owned the car for 4 years) so i can use the hatch and other compartments.

cool it guys, we need proof of ownership before we can cut any keys. Besides, we can't cut a working key on any immobilizer equipped vehicle anyway, including S2k, new accord, or civic.
