brakes hiss and i have to pump to build pressure
have a 1991 civic hatch std. i need some help asap... i was told i just need to bleed the brakes, but the people that told me didnt seem to sure. i was also told it might be my master cylinder. but i just replaced it with a used one. my rear drum pads are new and i cant really remember when i replaced the front pads. any help can help... i just recently tried bleeding them but not too sure about the sequence. is it right rear, left rear, right front and then left front?
you probably have a leak from the rear brake drums, It might be a leaky cylinder in the drum, or possibly you didnt bleed it right.
The brakes are hooked up in two circuits.
The right rear is hooked with the left front
and left rear with right front.
If one circuit fails you can still safely bring the car to a stop.
The idea is to start with the wheel furthest away from the MC - which is the passenger rear and then complete that circuit with the drivers front.
Follow through with the driver's rear and passenger front.
Just like 'fireant' stated.

i bled them again... this time (from what i was told) the right way. right rear, left front, left rear, then right front. and now they are stiff and work ok. still need a lil pumpin. i think it is my booster cuz it still hisses and my car still revs up to 2k... what ya think?
Just to clarify
Failing brake booster = the pedal gets really really stiff and you must push very hard to get the pads to bite. The pedal will not go down far without a great deal of pushing.
Failing Master Cylinder = the pedeal gets mushy, the pedal has a dead area, and the brakes require pumping.
A leak in the brake lines/piston/caliper/bleeders can also result in symptoms similar to the MC going out.
I think you should first look deeper into the rear drum thing people are mentioning If that produces no results, replace the MC with a re-man one, and be sure to bench-bleed it very thoroughly before installing.
Have you had someone listen for where the hissing is coming from?
