im asking this question for a friend with an 01 prelude. a friend of ours is selling S2 Stage 2 cams and cam gears. Were wondering if we can pull this off with stock valvetrain. his engine management and fuel components are stock aswell. what are some other neccesities he will need.
our friend says it will work fine. but were both kind of skeptical. any advice or input is greatly appreciated.

well if you really wanted to you could run the cams but would need the upgraded valvetrain at the very least and i suggest you convert your auto tensioner to a manuel one as they tend to fail with bigger cams due to the increase in pressure.
You won't need to adjust timing so don't bother with the cam gears. stock fuel components are fine. EM might not be needed, but always recommened. I would say at least check the A/F ratio and see where it's at after the install and decide from there.
i had a set of Crower stage2 cams and a VAFCII (not the same as skunk but this is my experience) and when i went to get tuned the changes were so minor, before and after the tune, very little really needed to be done but i had them tune it anyway any only picked up about 3-5whp after the tune. (i'm sure hondata would have produced slightly better results but i was on a budget) in the end was making approx 176whp. so maybe put it on the dyno and get an idea of where the A/F is at and then see if it would be worth it to get the EM for peak performance.
Anyway after trying to build the head i am now boosted with a built bottom end and stock head and much happier
Engine management would be needed in my opinion. I havn't seen any preludes that ran cams without a tune. I guess depends on how aggressive the cam though but to produce the best possible output it should be tuned.
The S2S2 cams are pretty aggressive. The vtec profile is a copy of the Jun's.
OP you need both upgraded valvetrain and tuning if you get these cams. Expenses add up quickly don't they..

Matt he's gonna need to upgrade the valve springs and retainers in the least. Shaun himself ran those stage 2 cams on a stock valvetrain and messed it up, did u know that? When i got mine i got lucky, they came with the springs and retainers.
I'd say to do it right and get the power out of it and for it to run efficiently i'd upgrade injectors and fuel pump, valve springs and retainers, either a chipped p28 to tune or a vafc.

arite some valid points expressed. i forgot to mentioned he has a VAFC-II. he might pick up a HONDATA S200 from a local seller.
and good point about the auto to manual conversion oranginal. even when i did my swap with no intentions of internals i did the conversion.
