oil cooler and trany oil question?
For 30-40 minute Sprint type races, what oil cooler setup would you use on a B18C5 motor with OEM rods and pistons????
For the same type pf races, what trany oil would you use in a Type R trany with Spoon 1.5 way dif and mfactory 4.928 fd....shifting at 8600-8800rpm???
Thanks

For your first question, it entirely depends on your current oil temps. You might already be running with you're oil at it's optimum temp, and cooling it might not be ideal. If you do need to cool it, how much cooling it needs would determine size and type of oil cooler. More information is needed to properly answer this question. Also, ambient temps would affect this, as well. Find out your oil's optimum operating temperature, what temps you're currently seeing, and then determine how much cooling you need. From that point, you can determine what size or type of cooler you need, and people will be able to make better suggestions with that info.
As for transmission fluid, check with Spoon and see if they recommend a particular MT fluid for that LSD. If not, I'd go with the Redline MT90 (it's what I'm using with my Quaife on their recommendation).

Do you have the stock radiator or an upgraded unit? The OEM oil cooler on the C5 motor is an air to liquid exchange type. Simply going to a bigger rad with proper shrouding can effectively lower the oil temps as well. Spoon, for example does not use an external oil cooler on their N1/Taikyu car and instead has one monster radiator fitted.
For the LSD, use Redline MTL and a bottle of Ford Friction modifier. Yes, from THAT dealership. This was recommended to me years ago by "Turtle" from Kensai Racing - also somewhat local to you from TO.

I used to buy it in a case of 6 or 12 as I had a KAAZ. Transmission fluid changes should be done with every Engine oil change when you have a metal/clutch type LSD.
I unfortunatly don't have dataloging or a water or oil temp gauge...I only have a oil pressure gauge.
I'm running a Fluidyne Integra Type R full rad with samco hoses and a mugen fan switch plus thermostat.
As for oil in the motor, I run Motul 300V 10-40

IMO you definatly need a dedicated oil cooler but it depends on a lot of things, but i'm 99% sure you need it.
Use a thermostated adaptor for the oil and install a temp gage in the oil pan.
I ran the same motor and did a lot of testing (w/ and w/o the cooler) on track and the oil became way too hot (in my books....anything over 250F is too hot....this treshold will vary from one person to another, but I do not care, it is my opinion, my motors, my reliability, my money) after maximum 15 minutes. I ran 300V 10-40, and tested mobil1 15-50 too, same results.
An oil cooler is a no brainer for any track addict that isn't rich enough to blow some bearings now and then.
It is cheap, doesn't affect pressure (tested it cause I had pressure problems), is reliable if well built...etc....no downside at all.
A MUST that is way too often neglected.....
I use canton racing remote filter, mocal thermostat and setrab cooler...with braided SS hoses, is it an indispensable add on...I would never run without it for more than 10 minutes.

b18c, stock bottom end, only spinning 8500 and im using a stock jdm oil cooler. i used to use an external one but i wanna try this and see what the temp differance is compared to the external set-up. i was able to see 260-280* with the external at race pace turning 8100 in my old engine.
as for tranny cooler, just change the fluid regularly.
