Trans Scatter Shield
What is everyone running here for a transmission scatter shield? Today a buddy of mine was running his car, he ran an 11.4 and got a warning because his scatter shield isn't sfi spec. They don't have the rules from the Sport Compact series and since NHRA dropped the class theres nothing in there. So they assumed we had to have the same thing as the pro/super pro classes.
Him and I talked to the track manager/head tech guy, and they are talking to the Div 6 director to see what can happen. It really worries since I'll be getting there next.
Is everyone pretty much running a golden eagle, or golden eagle style? Just figured I'd get some information from people out of province before I get a call from the Track Manager with details.
Thanks! (pics would be cool too)

hands down diest trans blanket. super simple and much lighter then conventional 1/4 steel stock.
if you change transmissions often as i did back then its a chore to get that steel one on then the blanket.
exospeed carries them and often in stock. pricing is very comparable as well if not cheaper.

I used to have the diest and hated it. It was a pain in the *** to take on and off. I can take my Golden Eagle one now off in about 2 seconds.
At PBIR yesterday the tech guy didn't look under the hood good and just asked me what brand of SFI scattershield I had. I told him Golden Eagle and he was like, "Who? It does have an SFI sticker, right?" I just told him yeah and he let me through. I thought there was gonna be a problem since it really doesn't have one. Back when I swapped from the Diest, I thought it was a great idea because it doesn't have to have the SFI number renewed since it doesn't have one, but now that there are no sport compact rules, it might become a problem

Yeah, According to the sport compact rules they did not require sfi spec.. Just had to be made from 1/4"steel, cover a certian portion of the transmission, and have specific hardware for attachment.
But now that there are no more sport compact rules do we have to follow the NHRA rules as to sfi specification?

And you are correct the rules say "if one is not commercially available, it can be made with nothing less than 1/4" steel . I dont remember what % of the trans has to be covered.
I just got a new batch of the IPG Scatter Shields completed and into the warehouse, just have to package them up and will have them ready for shipment shortly
a lot of guys have been running these for a couple of years -- simple 2 piece design, easy to install/remove and a nice tight fit around the transmission clutch case as to not get in the way of anything else.
Legal for all sanctioning bodies -- (they do not have to be SFI certified)

...and they have unfortunately even been proven to work...this is why everyone needs to run one -- you never know what can happen...

Yeah I know what your all saying about these, but our track follows NHRA rules, and are very serious about following them (ugg) We are in the middle of trying to figure out what we can do. Unfortunately the GE and IPG are not stopped for SFI certification, which does not help us currently, inless they let it slide. And I really do not want to run a blanket.
Taken from 2007 NHRA Sport Compact Series Rule Book.
Section 11, General Regulations, Page 81
Line 2:10
All front-wheel –drive or transverse-mounted applications using a clutch and running 11.99 or quicker, for which an SFI Spec 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, or 9.1 flywheel shield is not commercially available, must be equipped with a flywheel shield made of ¼-inch-minimum-thickness steel plate. Shield must surround the bellhousing completely except for area of bellhousing adjacent to differential and axle shaft. Shield may be multi-piece, with pieces bolted together using minimum 3/8-inch-diameter Grade 5 or M10 class 8.8 bolts; may be attached to engine and/or bellhousing.

i run the Diest blanket and dont have a problem with it... You can get em from will over at exospeed.com https://honda-tech.com/forums/performance-45/sfi-approved-transmission-shield-blanket-deist-safety-b-d-h-series-2515417/
So here's a question. If the IPG and GE shields are considered commercially available, do they not need to be SFI approved?? Or does the rule say that if the commercially available piece isn't SFI approved that it needs to meet a certain build criteria?
shhhh -- don't tell anyone

there are specs for how the scatter shields need to be built, will see if i can track down the information -- i found an old rule book from 2006 that had some info listed but want to make sure it is still using current information before i post it...
edit: here we go:

I believe it's not too much to have it certified.
I'm still playing around with the idea of my bellhousing so I won't need a shield. But money is one thing...the nightmare of paperwork and other stuff may suck royally lol

Ok so I decided this was a little fishey and went and bought an 09 rule book.
When they were teching my car he was looking at the wrong section and trying to make me follow the sfi specs from there... Little did we know that if we would have read on a few more paragraphs, we would have found this: (3rd paragraph down page 257 of NHRA 2009 rule book)
All front-wheel-drive or transverse-mounted applications using a clutch and running 11.49 or quicker, for which an SFI Spec 6.1,6.2, 6.3, or 9.1 flywheel shield is not commercially available, must be equipped with a flywheel shield made of 1/4-inch-minimum thickness
steel plate. Shield must surround the bellhousing completely except for area of bellhousing adjacent to differential and axle shaft. Shield may be multi-piece, with pieces bolted
together using minimum 3/8-inch-diameter Grade 5 or M10 class 8.8 bolts; may be attached to engine and/or bellhousing.
So the only differance between this rule from 2009 NHRA rule book and from the old sport compact rule book is the time has now been changed from 11.99 to 11.49.
The other funny thing i have also found out. The Deist transmission blanket is also not up to par. It is rated at sfi spec 4.1. If you read the rule quoted above you will see that the shield is required to be 6.1,6.2,6.3 or 9.1...

Well I talked to the Track Manager a few times today, look's like our scatter shields should be fine. First time a Honda has gone faster then 11.50 so they were very unaware of our stuff. Thanks everyone.
