Default Downside of running with 17" Rims

Hey folks,

Is there any major downside to running a 17" rim and tire combo for Auto X? I know a larger wheel will result in larger turn over, but is it going to result in a major power loss? I plan on going FI and running a small turbo, so I am looking for the increased handling that I will get with a 17" rim over something along the lines of a 15 and 16. Also since this is my first year running about X, I am hoping it will help prevent me from driving the tires off the car, like I have seen some of the other noobs do...

Run with whatever wheels you own already.

Downside of 17 is weight wich results in less performance.

Unless you have gigantic brakes or want to run crazy wide wheels, there is no gain really in running 17.

Run a 15 with 40-45 series and reap the benefits of low mass with improved autocross gear ratio (through the smaller diameter wheel).

They are going on a 94 Sol, with a B16A. I never thought about running 15" w/ a 40 series. How does that look? I know I shouldn't worry about the looks as long as it runs good, but I don't want to look like a tool..

In my opinion, there are many downsides to running 17" for auto-x....

1. Huge price of huge tires and huge rims.
2. Major weight gain of 17" setup is bad for auto-x.
3. 17" setup is bad for f.d. ratio, so that would be bad for auto-x.
4. Fender well / lca clearance problems might equal handling problems.
5. The look of 17", in my opinion.

If it is your first year of autocross, just driving what you have for now would be best (street tires,etc.). good luck.

You will have to remove the fender well plastics and roll the fenders because a 17 inch wheel will rub.
Stick with the 15's
