EJ8 tune up: $600 later.....
so i posted a thread about my 98 coupe a couple of weeks back
my friend was driving my car and broke rods 3 and 4... the broken rods punched through both sides of the block "front and back"
t'was a wrap for the block, so i swaped it out for a d16y7 block
droped it in
one thing im still not totally clear on is why the CKF(crankshaft fluctuation sensor) is not on the D16y7 but is on the y8... and is it gonna F my motor up driving without it... and what dose the jumper for it look like?
but i got it started, didn't have the tools for the timing job, and the ac tensioner bolt was stripped. so i had to take it to a shop for a major tune up... "big regret"
$600 dollars later, i drove it about 4 miles to work, and by the time i got 3/4 of the way there the car started over heating... i let it set fir 2 hours before i headed back home... on the way i stoped at a gas stationto cool down... i went to put water in and found the my radiator cap was warped and broken... so i ran to a near by kragen and grabbed a cap, added water, and took to the street... the heat stablized and i thought i fixed the problem
i had gotten all the way to a courner away from my house when i heard a sound similar to that of a tire picking a rock up off of the ground and bobbling free as it passed underneath my car.... only it had a quick wire hanger like twin to it. so i pulled over got out and examined the area on the ground i had just passed over and found nothing.
as i made my way back to my car i noticed steam rising from under my driverside head light, and fender... i quickly drove back to my house before it got too hot... i parked the car shut off the engine and poped the hood
coolant was squirting out from under the timing belt cover on tward the rear leaving a stream as it ran down my drive way...
i kind of hot about the whole satuation being that i just paid $600 and now i have a stream of coolant running out of my car
anybody no what they could have f'ed up on my car... water pump maybe.. and if so "how" is it that one could f up a water pump installation
and if it wasn't them, is this the work of the CKF sensor?
and if neither, what could have fallen "out from under" that cover?
i had worked on this car for a week, a mechanic has now worked on it... what the hell is wrong with this car, im soooo almost over it

idk what could have done this have you tried calling the shop that did the tune on your ride and let them know wtf thats what i would have done if they caused it they should fix it for free id b pissed if that was me sorry bro hope you get help on heree good luck keep us posted
are you sure you have a y7 block? It's supposed to have a ckf. Only jdm and pre obd2 blocks don't have one
do you still have the old block?
you can take the ckf off the y8 block, just swap out oil pumps. Although it shouldn't have anything to do with overheating.

Sounds like your water pump. Mine did the same thing, overheated but wasn't leaking much, then started pouring out coolant.
Flush your coolant when you change the water pump, mine had pieces of black stuff and **** in there.

yea its right there on the block D16y7 im looking at it right not.... and i was going to have them swap the oil pump, but they said it wouldn't work, that d16y7 and y8 have different specs... i was like ".....ok..." i don't know much about sohc specs so i took his word for it... im just gonna go to a Motorsports shop some time this week and have them do it... these guy i went to are all cert.
so i know not that the over heating thing is not it.... i called them last night when it first started overheating, they said to bring it in on monday. im just kind of hesitant to bring it back over there and i can get the crankpully bolt off to do it my self... i don't wanna strip it and f all my hardwork off to hell

You can get the crank pulley bolt off. It's pretty hard to strip it - use a 6 pt impact socket.
Bring it to a shop, have them take it off, then slightly tighten it back on. Drive it home, take it off, then do the rest yourself.

so today i put more water in it and drove it to my aunts house for dinner
it was cool the whole way... about 6 miles
i got sent to the store to pick up some stuff for macaroni and cheese
i drove to the store... everthing was fine
i came out of the store and got in it and started it up... i just turned for a second... so i let off... then i turned it again and it started up, but real ruff like.... i was like "??"...
i drove a couple of feet then i suddenly got hit with a powerful gassy smell
so i got out and popped the hood and had gas spraying everywhere....
For some strange reason my feul rail was not bolted down.....???????????........... now correct me if im wrong, but you don't need to un bolt the feul rail for anything while doing a tune up right????... i know the feul pump but not the feul rail

WTF, man you must have taken it to some ghetto *** shop... Sounds to me like they don't like to properly torque anything. Don't take your car back to that shop ever again!
after reading the first few lines, i just gave up.

i can't imagine why they would have felt the need to pull it off. if they did though however and neglected to put the rail back on properly, then they are definately in some hot water. that could have easily caused a fire and you'd be left with a smoldering heap of a vehicle right now.
But for the over heating issue, is your fan turning on? if it is then try burping your coolant system... i forgot to and spun a rod bearing on a motor i rebuilt for turbo setup.. =(
Also in a tune up they may have hooked it up to fuel injector clean to clean out the injectors and may have forgot to screw back the fuel rail.
GL with everything man

what the hell is this guy talking about???
hahahaha... not everybodys a dork like you.... i cant even find what you quoted.... take your corny a** back to the library .....
but anyway... i did take it back to the shop, i played it cool to assure that my car got fix...
i went in like.. "i brought my car to you guys to fix it... and i left with more problems i came with..." at first he tried to feed me some bullish like "it was like that when i left it with them, and that they never touched the feul rail or the water pump" garbo... so i asked him... "so your saying i left my car hear with you with a stream of coolant running out of it???... so then you guys lied to me and i really only needed a water pump then?... then he said "i saw no problem with the water pump?... finally i said "so then we agree that this was not like this when i dropped my car off with you guys then right???"....
long story short i got my car fixed and after a few looong weeks i am back on the road, and i will never go to a "auto repair" shop again

well not all repair shops are terrible, but i would certainly stay away from that one. i would recommend you possibly start working on your own car from now on, that way you atleast know what was done to it lol.
as expected, they continued with the whole "we never touched that part of the motor" ish, so i just went in and fixed it my self.
got a new water pump and fixed the feul rail myself.... shouldn't have had to thought but whats done is done
and the ckf.... i looked up the specs and there is nothing wrong with putting the oil pump from the original y8 block on the y7... so thats what im going to do on my next day off
If it really is a Y7 block then it should have a CKF sensor or at least the provisions to mount a CKF sensor on the oil pump, if it doesn't its either not a Y7 or someone used an OBD1 or JDM oil pump on it.
The easiest and cheapest way out of this (by far) is to preform the CKF fix shown here ---> http://technet.ff-squad.com/ckftrick.htm
Right, because it makes so much sense to reuse an oil pump from an engine that spun 2 rod bearings from presumably low oil pressure...
