89 oct rating into d16y8 good or bad
are you serious? I run 93 ALL the time from Shell or BP, ive put 89 in it once, and it ran like complete dog ***. if you ask me, 89 is throwing money out of the window.
its all in your head my friend. there is no noticeable change in the way a STOCK engine works comparing 89 to 93. if the car is tuned to the max then it will affect it.
There's no point in running higher octane unless you got serious performance upgrades.
Tell him to go back to 87 and the money he saves, have him donate it to honda-tech.

You guys are stupid.
Octane is a resistance to pinging/preiginition/detonation. Your 9.1:1 d16y8 doesnt need anything except 87 octance. Changing the octane rating, literally, will not make ANY difference.

No no proof. And I really don't care what you guys think or say or prove. My brother has a 2000 Nissan frontier and the same gas from the same station will run better with 89 then 87 due to some many miles on his truck. and i have seen this in 2 of my cars as well. Ill lend my car to a friend and when it comes back ill notice right off the back that they pumped 87 into it.
So, Believe me or not i don't really care. I run it with any of my high mileage cars. my motor i just build the D15B I will not feel a difference with 89 so 87 all day.

89 octane is fine.. If you had several modifications, chipped ecu.. possible adjusted timing i would maybe suggest a higher octane fuel, but since you gave no info.. just a SOHC vtec D16Y8 it will be fine.
***Pothole, in no way am I aiming this toward you, so please don't take it that way. I'm just putting in my .02 based on my experience, my car is very mildly modded and tuned, I wont say that doesn't have anything to do with it, because it may have, but I don't know so I'm not going to act like I do.
The only way you will need to run anything higher than 87 in a Y8 is if.....
you bump up the compression. Headgasket, piston, machinework, however else you bump up compression.
you Boost.........
you Advance Ignition timing.........
you use a higher temperature thermostat..........
Or if your motor was a mistake and your cylinders are creating hotspots that cause preignition.
I might have missed something but you get it. If you have a y8 with none of those modification then your just throwing your money away for anything more than 87.

This is in your owners' manual btw. I also have it posted here.

To elaborate a bit, from the 1997 del Sol manual (which includes the B16A2):
(S and Si models) (D16Y7 and D16Y8)
Use an unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number of 86 or higher. Use of a lower octane gasoline can cause a persistene, heavy metallic rapping noise in the engine that can lead to mechanical damage.
(VTEC model) (B16A2)
Use a premium unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number of 91 or higher.
If you are unable to find premium unleaded gasoline, you may substitute an unleaded regular gasoline. The engine will compensate for the lower octane, but you may notice a slight decrease in power as a result.
.
This is all straight from Honda.

We recommend gasolines containing detergent additives that help prevent fuel
system and engine deposits.
Using gasoline containing lead will damage your car's emissions controls.
This contributes to air pollution.
In Canada, some gasolines contain an octane-enhancing additive called MMT.
If you use such gasolines, your emission control system performance may
deteriorate and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp on your instrument panel may
turn on. If this happens, contact your authorized Honda dealer for service.

89 octane is fine. Kinda pissing away money if you don't have mods that require it, but whatever. I run 93 octane but that's due to my chipped ECU from Phearable... if I run less than 91 my car runs like ***.
TravisCadello, it's not the mileage on the engines on the cars you're talking about, it's the condition of the engine. There is likely some gunk in the combustion chamber that is causing denotation and the higher octane is more resistant to detonation, hence the problem going away. You're really only masking the problem and I bet that if you ran some seafoam (the proper way... 1/3 in oil, 1/3 in gas, 1/3 through vacuum lines... changing oil only a hundred miles or so later) you would be able to run 87 no problem.

Btw Do they even sell octane lower than 87?

I always run the cheapest, think it's 87? Runs just fine, but I only get 20 mpg in my auto d16y7, driving like a granny.
next time I'll fill up with 89 or 91 and see how it goes
