Default What size shim did you end up with?

I know alot here have changed springs, valves, had valve jobs. What was the general size spring size spacer you needed to correct installed height? I know the installed height of Stock, Ferrea, Supertech,REV, skunk valves vary, as do there springs/ retainers. What size spring shims were most common? I am thinking of having some non-standard made. That is the reason for the question. Did you just use the .015, .030, or .060? I have found the installed spring height, with different valves, to want different numbers. What has been your experiance?

not sure your looking for D series, and its been a few years but...

d16z6 head
2nd valve job (third if you count the factory)
crower springs & retainers
supertec standard size valves

If i remember correctly intakes were still ok but the exhausts needed .015" or a little less **** maybe .010" id have to dig up my notes. There was a Buick application that fit the bill. ended up running them as is thought due to time constraints. based on the spring rate & heights it didn't seem like much or a difference in pressures.

Thanks Marcin, I thought I might get 3 responders, after 1000's here have changed springs and valves. I guess the question is, what is spring height, and why does it matter. Looking for a technical answer, I should have asked for the best color neon lights.

Too high of an installed height will reduce spring pressure, won't it? If so, this could lead to unexpected valve float even with tough springs rated for five-figured RPM numbers?

Yes, does not matter whose spring/retainer you buy, but if installed at the wrong height, It's not there problem when stuff happens.

You are assuming installers have spring pressure testers.

Does removing material from tip of the valve stem compensate for the material removed from the valve seat?

Good question.

Answer is NO.

It will help though in giving you room for the valve adjustment, because if you don't grind the tip you might not have enough room to back out the tappet adjustment screw.

Not really, just an installation sheet. Installed height is xxxmm. or xxx in. I know there are tons of people on here that have changed springs/retainers. Curious as to what the most popular shim was.

what are you guys using to measure installed height?
i used a machinists rule. It would be nice if they made this in "tiny"

EDIT, looks like a small mic is made now. do they work?

pretty sure you own one iirc. i am curious if you have seen any variation between springs form the same brand/model line or set. differences in seat and open pressure between the same bag ever? Im guessing this is part of the manufacturers QC but im curious.

thanks
