My cuz wants to install some jdm itr pistons in his gsr. He has about 28k on the motor. He wants to install stock bore pistons, meaning no .25 overbore honing. Will he have any problems with oil consumption or reliability? I am trying to get him to wait til he has the extra cash for a hone job.
I would hone the walls before putting in new pistons and/or rings.
but thats all that would need to be done is a hone.
for .25 over you would have to bore and hone.

Along the same topic, would you recommend a hone with cross-hatching pattern or a simple ball-hone to deglaze the cylinder walls?
Here's the machine shop's take on it:
On a motor with 75k miles on it, they did not want to risk having to overbore if the honing process took too much off (already had stock bore JDM ITR pistons on hand), which can happen with the hones they use that have the cross-hatching capability.
They recommended a ball hone to deglaze so that it wouldn't risk the overbore with the stock bore P73-00 pistons I already had.
Another curious question, would a non-cross hatched pattern allow the rings to seat properly and retain relatively low wear on the cylinder walls with little oil burning.

lopey: honing and boring are two different things. he will want to get the block honed
we always use a flat stone rather than *****. ***** arent as consistent
my machinist can hone the walls without removing too much material
non cross hatch pattern?
