maybe the car failed as a gross polluter one time and it was sent to the DMV or i believe if you have a salvage title you have to smog it every year.

 

Something doesn't sound right, but call the DMV and see if they can explain it.

In 05 you needed to get a smog, reff'ed it in 06 for the 05 smog.

In 08 was probably for 07

Now it's 09 and your due again.

What happens is the smog checks are every two years. When you did the transfer you caught it in the OFF year. So you would need one the next year and from then on it is every two years.

You are just now getting caught up. For the most part it falls back to when the car was first reg'd. So if you have a odd year car then the smogs are due in the odd year. This is not alway's the case. There are exceptions.

If you go to bar.ca.gov then on the left side there is a "vehicle test history" click on that and enter in the lic.# and you can see the pattern of smogs each year for your car.

If you have any more q's call the DMV. their number is on the renewel form.

 

ok well here's the smog history. every single test was a pass, never failed once. i looked it up by vin just to be sure
6/99 smog check by dealer
7/02 test only smog check, renew reg by previous owner
7/04 test only smog check, renew reg by previous owner
8/05 test only smog check, to transfer the car to me
8/06 state referee, not to renew reg
4/08 test only smog, renew reg
now i need to smog again at a test only station

it seems they didn't require me do a smog check the year i went to the referee, but didn't count it as a renewal smog.
i already got it smog checked today anyway, don't really want to deal with trying to fix it. if it happens again next year then i'll probably call dmv
i would think every single test only pass i have would finally get me off the damn "test only list".
the history shows it never had a fail, and all the ones since 2002 were test only or the referee!
