Is Fully Synthetic oil bad for our old engines?
Search = nothing..
I have always used Fully Synthetic in by '89 B16 but at work a Tech came to the window (I work in the Parts Dept.) and he needed us to order a few quarts of regular oil (we dont even carry the stuff)
..when I asked why, he said older engines usually run better on the regular stuff and it was actually specified for this car. When I asked him what year the car was it was early '90s.
Just wondering if anyone had heard of this and why..
Thanks.

hmmm. i actually used mobil 1 synthetic for my 2nd gen dohc zc for the first time, and it runs smoother than the regular oil i had on there.
from what I've been told, synthetic is much more "slippery" and has a way a finding its way past rings and gaskets on older engines. I'm not sure because I've heard both sides of the argument but I lean toward dino. Mainly because I'm very religious with oil changes and the car never gets past 3000 mi between changes so it makes more sense to use the dino just because of cost for me personally. In my experience synthetic also burns faster on higher mileage engines.
NO, but just check the oil regularly and top it off between changes, thats the most important thing with any oil, just don't run it low. People get on the whole synthetic is good for a million miles thing and don't check to see if the car is burning oil. I think its a matter of opinion, I just like dino because I change the oil regularly on my cars so I'm not gonna spend the money on synthetic for no reason. Im sure you could also get into the scientific arguments for high heats in race cars etc, which isn't what I'm talking about, just daily drivers for me.
I don’t see how using a motor oil with superior lubricating properties could be a bad thing, no matter how many miles. It makes sense to run dino juice as opposed to synthetic in a new engine to allow the proper amount of engine wear.......what does that tell you?
As far as cost, synthetic can generally go 2-3 times as far between oil changes without breaking down, which somewhat offsets the cost IMO.

I believe the reason Tech's would say full synthetic is not good for older engines is because with more wear on the bearings you would have more play or clearance. Synthetic is more slick so it could be easier to spin a bearing.
also, synthetic oils have more detergents in it
and can cause seals to leak from cleaning the gunk out of them
synthetic is more slick to the touch, from my exp
i think if there is no leaks and the car runs well
change your oil regular
and it shouldnt matter
while we are the subject,
just rebuilt my motor B18a1 ,
and drove the first 500 on regular oil,
heard it was better to break an engine in on coventional oil
thinking about running synthetic for the rest of the motor life

its not bad, but the say use dino oil for break in because its cheaper and you have to change the oil very early so why waste money, also mobile1 is not full synthetic, do some research and you will be suprised what you guys find, castrol syntec, mobile 1 and a few others that claim to be full synthetic arent, oil companies lobbyied for specification changes in north america so certian oils can be classified as full sythetics...typically i run lubromoly full synthetic, atleast i know im actually getting what im paying for...

as long as u use the specified oil for ur engine u will be fine. And u change ur oil according to how dark it gets from cleaning out ur engine. if ur engine is dirty the oil will get darker faster meaning u have to change ur oil out sooner. BUT it is better to change ur oil before that even happenes lol
