Icon2 Old used rebuilt trans for road racing?

I'm in need of a new trans for my race car. What I really need is a H22 VTEC 92-96 prelude trans. Its code is M2F4.

I found a few used ones 100K'ish miles for $(250-400)+ shipping, and all new bearings from Honda is another $250. If I have to add new syncro's or any other parts I'm looking at +(200-300) more, so after shipping and rebuilding it's going to be 800-1100 total. Now I have to decide if it's better to spend $1800 and just get a brand spanking new one from Honda. :/ Anyone have experience with running old rebuilt trans Vs new? Is it worth the extra 800 to get all new?

Thanks.

I used a re-built S1 (originally had 140,000 mi) for 2 years and didn't have any problems. The tranny is still good and sitting in my garage as a spare. When I had it re-built I used syncros, bearing, and seals from Gearspeed, and all other parts from Acura (spring pins, forks, fasteners, etc. whatever needed replacing).

I am currently using a YS1 (I don't know original history since I got it off Ebay, but it looked in worse shape than my old S1) that is running great for the past year. No problems and the fluid looks like new every time I change it.

I am fully confident that both of these transmissions are as good as new.

Am I missing something or is a transmission rebuilt with new OEM seals, bearings and gear sets the same as a crate trans from Honda? Assuming $1100 to rebuild your trans, that's still a $700 difference, or 64% more to buy new than rebuild. Unless you don't have the time to do it yourself, rebuilding seems like a no brainer.

i have gone both ways (used and rebuilt) and won't chance a used unit for racing. plus, if your gonna go in there to put your M-Factory diff and final int ehre you may as well freshen the rest of the box.
btw-any idea what caused the failure?

I have a rebuilt GSR trans in my car. The trans came froma buddys car that was in a accident and tore out the lower mount of the trans. Had to replaced that part of the case at the same time I replaced all bearing seals with OEM used GearSpeed carbon coated syncro, KAAZ LSD, and mFactory 4.9fd. It has been through 39 dyno pulls, 12 auto-x, 4 track days and street use never once has it gave any indiaction of letting go and no grinds but i do change/strain the oil every 2-3 auto-x and every track day. So for the price of a factory Type R and what I have in this, I would rebuild anytime as I get what I wanted the first time and didnt have to spend more $$$ on it to addons.

You'll be fine with a rebuilt Walter. If you don't have time or are uncertain about doing it yourself I'll take care of it for you. Just a few hours away so wouldn't need to ship anything.

The big thing will be the hubs/sliders. If they're worn, it will definitely be worth it to go for the new trans as the cost to rebuild a trans with new sleeve sets is much higher than a new trans.

I priced out a rebuild to include every sleeve set+all bearings+ eals. Came out to $1150-+50. What else is there to replace?

Thats it unless the mainshaft needs to be replaced. Doubtful on a 100k trans though.

I didn't have to replace any complete sleeve sets on the S1 (just the syncros). I had to replace only the Reverse sleeve set on the YS1 (the rest only the syncros). All the rest were still in great shape. The guy who re-built the tranny for me also examined the shift forks for wear, but said they were still fine.

Other components I chose to replace besides what you already mentioned:
The detent ball bolts (2x) on the YS1.
The clutch release fork, bolt, and spring.
New clip, washer, and nut on the end of the countershaft.
New bolts (I think there were 12) for the final gear to diff.
