Hello. I have a midori green ej6 and I recently painted the front end and rear bumper. Still need to colorsand the front end to get rid of orange peel. I was wondering how would you go about fading the paint onto the doors so the paint can match. The front end came out a shade darker than the doors. I just want to know how to make them match or blend them together so it isn't noticeable. You can see the two different shades in the picture.

 

 

Ok is there a proper method for this because I was just thinking of sanding the clear off the whole door then mix the paint really thin. And when I spray just do really light coats and fade it about half way through the door. Then reclear the whole door. Is this correct?

 

That is sort of how you do it... You don't sand the clear off the door. Wetsand the door with 800 grit or scuff up with gray scothbrite. You need to go to your paint store and get a color blender or clear basecoat for whatever paint line you are using. Spray a coat of this clear base coat over the whole door. Then spray one coat of your green base a few inches into the door. You then take that already reduced basecoat and mix it 1:1 with your clear basecoat to weaken and thin out the color. Now spay another coat on the front of the door going a few inches past where you stopped your first coat. Some colors that is all you need and some need to be futher reduced and blended out further.. I can tell you that even with a perfect blend you will still notice that the front and back of the car are different colors. That paint needed to be tinted to match better even with blending. Its way off.

 

hmm I dont want it to be noticeable. So I guess Ill go buy some more paint and repaint the whole body. I still have some of the old paint so the guy at the paint store should be able to make an exact copy of it I'm assuming.

 

i wonder if the place you go just has people that mix paint that dont care...

after you put in your year,make,model,paint code there are still sometimes many different shades/variances of your color....

you should ask how many come up for your car, i would do it but i'll forget

 

He actually mixed it and painted it onto one of my fenders. It matched when he sprayed it but then he said he was going to add a little black into it or something like that. Thats why i think it came out darker. The shop I go to is great. The owner is awesome. ITs called GE paint

Yeah. I guess ill leave it two tone for now and then when I save up some more I'll respray the whole car.

 

bottom line... never paint something on your car without blending it into everything else... it will never match perfectly... you're always gonna have to blend

also even if you blend into the doors... its still darker then the rest of the car... u needa get your match even closer be4 you blend into the doors because thats almost light and day right there to me... u might end up with a fade away darker to lighter colored car which can possibly be cool! lol jk

I agree except if your just spraying a lip or a sideskirt. 90% of the time any adjacent panel to the part that was repainted will need to be blended.

Yes and no,
Depends on color, brand of paint, panel being painted.
Ive done many front caps with diamont and the color match is spot on. I know if I used a chromabase or some colors in PPG I would definetly have to blend.

BUt you are right, the correct way is to blend if the panel your spraying is getting color and the color is within 12 inches of another painted panel.

 

Depends more on fade and the guy mixing the paint than it does on paint brand.

 

SO your saying if me or my jobber mix electron blue pearl in ppg and then in nason, the brand doesnt matter. LOL brand has everything to do with it.

 

Best to do it from the get go. That way theres no guessing if its going to match this time or not

 

Never any guessing, always have a test panel/card before hand and the above could have been avoided. But yes better off doing the blend the first time.

 

just cover your car from the door back and let the front end sit in the sun for a bit u gotta do few hours aday and it will match basically u gotta let it oxidize lol jk did he primer the fenders black or something before painting? usually on black primer the paint will come out darker like when i had my milano red integra the bumper didnt match the rest of the car because it was that stock black unpainted color..the guy didnt bother primering it

 

the front end was green also but it was painted with a can. So i decided to just spray it with my gun I didnt use any primer. The front end had shades of midori on it but it was all mismatched. Now its all one color but its still darker than the rest of the body

 

As far as blending the show Trucks on spike TV just did a 3 part episode on body repair on a truck. One of which was blending or fading into OEM paint. You might want to check it out. that gives you the jiffs of whats going on.

With metallics you got to be careful too. If you painted a fender standing right side up and one laying down by the time you hang both they will look different. Also when you spray if you want it to lay darker you could spray it wet and dry for lighter becasue the flakes will stand on end.
