idle surge, valve?
hey all
ive got an idle surge in my '96 DX. ive been led to believe its the fast idle valve on the tbody. ive taken this valve off and cleaned it with brake cleaner (didnt have tbody cleaner) to no effect, the car doesnt throw any codes, and if i unplug the TPS the idle dips to a steady 650-700 if i were to guess.
ill have another valve waiting at my shop for me tomoro, but once i plug it in i cant return it, so id like to rule out any other possibilities seeing as i paid $190 for a replacement valve.
can anyone give me a few things to run through/test to make sure im replacing the right part? thanks

Fast idle valve on a D16Y7? Do you mean IACV (Idle Air Control Valve)?
My '96 DX had a surging idle, no CEL and I had a tough time pin pointing the problem too. Finnally found a small vacuum leak - it was the throttle body gasket.
Use the brake cleaner or TB cleaner and spray it around the intake manifold/throttle body area. If you have a vacuum leak, it will suck in the brake/TB cleaner and the engine will start to chug. Take your time and try to pin point the leak.
It also could be the TPS like Draven said but that *usually* sets off a CEL.

got it, it was that valve. thanks draven, yes its technically called the IACV (when i think of it i always picture coolant and come up with fast idle thermo valve). mcvtec, good info and will come in handy if i have to deal with honda idle surge again
thanks!
thanks!
