Whoa whoa whoa. I had been wondering about this. I was gonna try to mix some fix with Rusto since I'm gonna be spraying my car. But I've decided to use a single stage instead. Makes me wonder though...

I laugh at threads like this, mainly because they spend so much time and effort dealing with rustoleum not realizing that there are REAL auto paint brands out there that are really affordable and you can spend the same amount of time working with good quality paint. Well I guess everyone has their own opinion on what to do. You wouldn't catch me dead with a rusto can in my hands.

You need a compressor and gun to spray it. I rolled my car and it came out like this, I'm not done with doors or QP's yet. $50 in everything. With your method you'll need tools that aren't included in cost

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I actually think it's cool that this guy did what he did. props to him.
Cool, I'm glad you went with the real stuff.
As stated below, I never said "the same price as" I said, spend the same amount of time and effort. Elbow grease if you will. But regardless of what I said, I'm up for the challenge:
My favorite website tcpglobal.com
Acrylic enamel KIT, gallon of paint, reducer, hardener, stir sticks and strainers etc.:
$69.95

Single stage Urethane KIT, Gallon of paint, comes with hardener and reducer etc.:
$94.95

Base coat/clear coat KIT, gallon of paint, Gallon of clear, hardener, reducer etc.
$214.95

Other paints:
Duplicolor Paint shop paints
$19.95 per quart white lacquer

$19.95 per quart clear coat

Even house of kolor is 149.95 for a gallon of white base.
We're not talking huge numbers here. These are simple whites of course, you can get way more complicated if you want to. I'm just not into the 50 paint job thing. It all comes down to personal opinion. I would feel like I was wasting my time putting so much effort into rustoleum paint, when I could be putting that same effort into real auto paint. There's a reason auto paint is auto paint, and house paint is house paint. I'm sure there will be a point where someone will figure out how to get rusto paint to look just like auto paint, at least for me, I'll know I'm sportin real paint, and not some alternative.
Right. Overall, I don't think that there's been enough statistical research to determine the cost savings of the "50 dollar" paint job. If someone were to document exactly everything they are doing and then keep all their receipts, then it'll be much easier to figure out.
As for me, I'm sticking with real auto paint.
Where? Where can you find inexpensive, good quality auto paint that does a better job but costs the same. I asked another guy this and he wouldn't answer. I'm all ears because if there's a better way of doing this for the same amount of work to go through, then I'd rather use auto paint. I'm just curious why there isn't a $50 paint thread with real auto paint if it's really so comparable in price.

I have all the receipts for what I'm doing, I'll find them and post up exactly what I bought, how much it cost without the paint. Then we can add the paint and find out, when starting from scratch, how much MY project went. I'm sure others out there can and will find things cheaper and some can and will make do with less or more than what I bought.
While I don't have the exact numbers, basically I'm in the hole for $180. And that was for everything. Sandpaper, drop cloths, HF hplv gun, painters tape and all the other stuff. Rusto was $22. I went on the TCPGlobal site and priced out a matching color and ended up at $70 (rounding up...it was like 69.95). That was before the clear coat and... reducer I think.
At this point I'm starting to get a little discouraged because while I don't want to have "teh ghetto ride" I also can't afford to take it somewhere or buy the real deal. And since the best alternative looks like the boat paint, I'm prolly just going to return the rusto and try my hand at the West Marine stuff.

You can tell it was rusto. The car looks like poop. Take some pics out in the sun instead of the shade. I dont know why you guys dont save up $200 and shoot real automotive grade paint. If you ever want to respray your car your up ***** creek.
The only REAL cost saving solution to shooting real auto paint is to do all the prep, and to find someone that will let you use their paint booth, or find a place that does rent-a-booth, they're out there. With all of that, doing the work yourself, hell you can even rent a damn HVLP gun, I'm willing to bet the difference between real auto paint and rusto isn't bad at all, something like a couple hundred bucks.
